aaron_gx Builds a Ritewing ZXL! (build thread)

I am the proud new owner of a Ritewing ZXL (81" zephyr2). Thanks Chris, you run a top notch show.

I will be documenting the build as it comes along, with plenty of pictures.

Unpacking the box, I found plenty of goodness... Basically a ZII, with extensions, and some custom firberglass sparring. This is going to be sweet.

Pile 'O' Spars No carbon fiber anymore. All fiberglass, which is better for RF purposes.

Here is my ZII (middle) with ZXL laid out for comparison (top), and the "Z 0.5" or Mini Zeph (bottom)

This should be bucket loads of fun to build, and I expect the ZXL will fly like a champ. Stay tuned, as I will update this thread as I complete the steps of the build. I will later have a build thread as I start the Mini Zephyr build. The Z.5 looks like a winner too.

thanks sentry! Its a contour though It slips into a nice cutout I made, and the tape only secures it in place when I'm doing stupid things. lol.

It is very impressive in person. I cant wait to get this thing in the air. Too bad its going to be very cold by the time I'm done it.

The Zephyr.5 is a cute little thing, isnt it? I have a feeling its bite will be worse than its bark I will start a build thread for it, once my zxl nears completion. Wife says I go crazy when I'm building more than one plane at a time.

Picked up some supplies. This bird will have some fluoro on it for visibility sake. It wont be an eyesore, I promise.

Sections all glued together. The size is impressive. (thats what she said). Secondary spar install in progress.

Doing the secondary spars, I decided to melt in another trench across the bottom and complete the spar across the battery bay. It may or may not offer any more strength, but it will certainly not hurt anything.

Pinned the spar down with tiny finishing nails, ensures proper contact of spar to foam during glue cure.

    Main spar.

I marked out CG on the wing, as directed by Chris. Manufacturer CG spec is 10.5" from nose back. This is a lot different than my ZII, and will open up a lot of new possibilities for equipment placement, as my old bird was always tail heavy.

well, I cant go too much further until all my parts get here from china. I need the twisted servo leads badly. I suppose I could go with cat6, but we will see how bored I get in the mean time.
