    Cool

It has been a little while since Tim has released the QAV500. I ordered it the day preorders started which gives you an idea about how slow I am to put together a project

My QAV500 is fully loaded with FPV gear. My original hover time was 16:15. recently added the Water Buoys since I regularly fly over water. This brought the hover time down to the 15:30 to 15:45 mark. My regular flight times vary according to throttle management but fall somewhere between the 14-15 minute mark.

There are a few items, included in the build, that I should point out since they are somewhat out of the ordinary.

I wanted to put a 6000mAh Nano-Tech where the standard flight battery sits. This required taller aluminium standoffs. The stock stand-offs are 35mm. I purchased 45mm standoffs made by Axial. (Since posting this build thread I have had a number of inquiries as to where the stand-offs can be purchased. I got them from Tower Hobbies. The stock number for two units is LXTJA2 and the URL is HERE.) Here is a pic of the difference.

Next I added an RF Beacon. A few of you may know that I lost a Hex on its re-maiden having just completed some modifications. I additionally lost a quad looking for the hex!!! It is a painful story. (UPDATE!! I actually found the lost quad using the QAV500! The quad was about 60 feet up in a tree. I hired a tree climber to get it down.)

In any-case, one of the methods I am utilizing to prevent a reoccurance of these losses is the use of an RF Beacon and directional finder. You can find the products here:

    http://www.com-spec.com/rcplane/index.html

Additionally I am using iTelemetry on the iPhone. (Tracking Data comes from the EZOSD. This is an awesome utility!!!) I also record the SD flight vid on a DVR ground recorder. My EZTracker also keeps track of last known coordinates.

My intention is to update this thread as I make changes to the QAV500. The future holds a parachute recovery system from Fruity Chutes so check back if you are interested. I will also post videos from time to time.

    My setup is as follows:

    Platform: QAV500
    GoPro Hero 2
    RMRC 600XVN
ImmersionRC 600 mW 5.8 gHz TX
ImmersionRC EZOSD w/100 amp current meter
Locosys LS20031 GPS antenna mod for the EZOSD (Huge Improvement!!!)
    Naza w/GPS
    Turnigy Plush 30 Amp ESC's
Multiwiicopter 60 amp Power Distribution Board
Axial 45mm Aluminum Standoffs (to fit a 6000 mAh NanoTech)
    Tiger MT-4006-13 motors
    Graupner 10x5 eProps
    JR AR9300 RX
    DPCAV Lost Model Alarm
Two Water Buoy Key-chains for water recovery
    Communications Specialists PT-1B RF Beacon
    Turnigy NanoTech 4S 6000mAh 25-50C flight battery
    All-Up-Weight = 2334 Grams

Here you can see the handheld directional receiver that will be used in the event that the quad flies into oblivion...

Here is the iTelemetry data from my first successful use of the technology. I am using ImmersionRC gear extensively and I have to say that it has been rock solid in every respect. I am a very happy customer.

When you upload your video in the video manager you have to check the box to include it in your post.

Not sure on the avatar though...

Hey did ya get that quad back?

Is this Nano 4S or 3S?

BTW - I would re-think positioning of FPV cam - from the pics it looks like it will be easy to hit it during any harder landing in high grass or something.

Jack2010, it is a 4S battery. You are right about the vulnerability of the FPV cam. I am actually going to attach it to the GoPro case which will be on a single axis pitch gimbal. I don't like looking at the ground in forward flight

Scott, are you free this Friday morning to test up parachute? I can film the event both from the ground, and from my quad.

Kevin, I have a hard time getting away from the mechanical connection of through-hole wiring. It seems like a moot point since that ESC's are surface mount wiring solder jobs anyways. Glad you like it. I should have some video up soon.
