Thread: Build my own freestyle/race quad or buy a Vortex?

Build my own freestyle/race quad or buy a Vortex?

I have a Vortex 285 and do flips and rolls with it. I am also starting to race it. It is alright for stunts but seems to go out of control a lot especially when I do funnels or try aggressive moves. For racing it is really too labor intensive for repairs and the ESC's are kind of small for 4s packs.
I could go with the Vortex 250 and avoid a lot of imagined set up hassles. Or I could build my own. I would only attempt to build my own if I can get a recipe with all the parts I would need and most importantly instructions or a software download using Cleanflight to program the PID's (?) for Freestyle flying and racing. I have no idea how to do that myself!
I am looking for something the size of a 250 or smaller for 5" props and 4s 1300 mAh packs.
Any advice or links to this kind of info would be much appreciated.

In some cleanflight versions u can GO with auto tune is simple to setup and it's helping you to set the Pids!

So I would do that in your case!

Guess you should keep ur 285 vortex i have one me self and I actually think it's quite good even in tight manuers I've been building allot of 250 quads so I bought to have a dissent quad to fly when I'm building a new one....!

Thanks! I don't understand "auto tune" so I will research that.

It's a feature in cleanflight that u can set to a switch, a bit like a "flight mode " that during flight helps you to calculate Pids so that your quad flies better ... That's the point you barely can feel its operating but you can feel the result ....!

You will still need a battery connector and 12-14AWG wire for the battery lead.

And the same for the Goby 180

You will still need 14-16awg wire and battery connectors.

For more power on this setup go with the 2204 2600kV Blue series and 20a Race ESC http://bit.ly/1TvxrZU

These will spin 4x4.5x3 where the 1806 will only spin 4x4.5

I would stay away from Auto Tune, especially if you are a noobie. It is more of a novelty and can leave you in a bad situtation, such as a P term of <1 if something happens and you need to take back control. I usually toss out the following link that describes the tuning in laymens terms.
