FAA registration - what you need to know (11/23/2015)

I was listening in to the conference call regarding sUAS and the recommendations. This is what the recommendations are as they stand right now (11/23/2015):

    - All sUAS between 0.55 and 55 lbs will require a registration number
    - There will be one registration number per pilot regardless of the number of aircraft they own. Every aircraft a pilot owns will have the same number.
    - There will be no registration fee.
    - Registration is name and address only.

It was expressed that the purpose of registration was so that the FAA may send out educational material to the operators on safe operation.

EDIT: And then the FAA went the route of tyranny... no surprise...
    - Registration is $5 (not free)
    - Registration requires you to sign a contract stating you will follow their rules (which are not law). It is enforceable because you paid a fee.
    - The AMA is stating to hold off on registration

Here's a video summing it up:

If it is broken, fix it. if it isn't broken, I'll soon fix that.

So this brings up a question or two. Does being an AMA member automatically register me and can I use my AMA number as my registration number? IE do I now have to have two numbers on my airplanes? Also will this registration number be required prior to purchasing hardware? IE do I have to provide the number when I buy gear sort of like how you scan your drivers license to buy sudafed? Or are they going to rely on the public to voluntarily register after the fact?
    I aim to misbehave.

Sounds fair for now, what's coming down the pike with state/local laws?

Very bad things, get involved now with your local politicians.

Maybe ONE of the purposes. Otherwise, why would we be required to place that number on each craft? I think it's a little more than education.

Oh it's to identify you too, that's easy enough to see.
And now if there's a problem, and they track it to you, they have the added ammo of "you were sent educational materials".

So when that cop bust you for FPV, you have no out, no "I didn't know".
