RMRC Mini Sky Hunter - Official Thread

I've had the pleasure of being an early tester of the RMRC Mini Sky Hunter and thought I'd kick off a thread for those interested here @ the Lab.

Release Date: 1st week of April, 2015

The Mini Sky Hunter is a lot of fun very flexible for a smaller sized FPV plane.

I pushed the one I have @ a max AUW of 2.612 lb which is more than the recommended flight weight using a 5100 3s and with a Mobius on the horizontal stab and even then it held up to hard flying with loops and rolls. That was a bit on the heavy side I could feel when flying, but I figured I'd really push it to see if I could find a weak spot and nothing broke.

With a 3s 3300 and a Mobius on the front or forward of the CG I was flying it @ 2.362 lb. and that was really nice.

For either weight I pushed it with the following flying types:

    a) Aerobatic - Loops, rolls, inverted flight

    b) Formation Flying - Very easy to keep up with the common fixed wing speeds from 20-35mph

    c) High speed maxed out throttle - Not sure of max speed, but I could fly fairly fast given the stock PNP power combo.

    d) Slow speed flying - Very easy to fly slow and easy, and land for easy soft short stop landings

    e) Max flight times - I didn't have an OSD on to monitor voltage, and used the balance connector on the Fatshark power filter so I didn't have a voltage alarm, but with the 3300 I made a few flights over 20 mins and landed with around 11.1V still on the pack, so I'm confident I could make a 30 minute flight managing power... likely more.

With the 5100 I've only flown that once and landed also after 20 mins and had 11.3V remaining, so again, more flying could have been had likely getting around 35 or so mins before you'd want to be landing.

On mine I need to balance the prop as I just tried it straight up how I received it, so there are a few vibrations I think I can work out.

The video should cover a lot of the rest, but if there are questions, feel free to ask.

Note*** For those concerned on wing flex during some of the hard pulled loops and rolls, the frame I was testing was missing some of the added carbon reinforcement that will ship with the PNP and kit versions from RMRC. Even without the added reinforcement and over weight plane it was able to handle high pressure situations very well as you can see in the video.

Is the bottom bracing on the wing G10 sheet?

Do you have any performance specs on the PnP version?
    - Cruise speed
    - Top speed
    - Flight time (w/ x battery)
    - "Pilot feel" for vertical performance (w/ x battery)

When nothing else out there will suit your needs... design and build it yourself.

@ PabloJaime - They should be arriving to RMRC on Thursday, so I expect they'll be listed shortly there after!

@ Derrick - The bottom bracing (from the manufacturer in China): "Epoxy resin glue on fibre cloth, the fibre cloth is inside the glue, there are a lot of glue around the fibre cloth which makes it very strong, so we would like to call it Epoxy resin piece"

Some of the other details I've listed that I know so far in the OP, but will test more to see if I can get stuff like top speed. Without an OSD it's a bit hard to do as it was if I wanted to flying faster than the Anaconda in formation that had the OSD. Other details for the setup are in the links I've posted in the OP as well. I expect as more people uses these we'll see more info populate tis thread.

Hey Dave, one more question.. Do you think an 2.6 APM with minimosd will fit inside or will need a smaller flight controller?

Can't wait to get my hands on one. I hope there might be a mini mini sky hunter one day as well. Would love to have a micro version to fly around the neighborhood. In the meantime I will anxiously wait the arrival of this beautiful bird.

I've not personally setup one of those systems yet, but while it might be tight I think you could get something like that in... but don't quote me on that one.

I'm sure I could get a Vector in one if I wanted to.
