Traveling with a Drone: Share your experience

Let share our travel experience, good or bad, on this thread. This an experience thread, not a list of local regulation. Tell us what your issue was, if any, where, when and why.

    ► 1. America
✓ USA & Canada are ok. They will check the LiPo for explosive though and some security agents will tell you that you can't board the LiPo as a carry on. Don't hesitate to contradict them (politely!). Put your LiPo in safety bags, it will help a lot. Print those official FAA instructions and have them with you during boarding.- Brazil & Colombia are ok, Security agents will just bother you with the LiPo in your carry on bag. Print the international regulation (IATA section 2.3.5.9) and have it with you during security checks
    ✓ Bahamas is ok
✓ Most Caribbean seems to be fine
    ► 2. Europe & Russia

✓ Europe is generally ok. Had personal experience with Germany, Italy, Spain, France & UK. Custom may check it but nothing more.
    ✓ Iceland is ok.
    ► 3. Asia
X Uzbekistan forbids the use and import of any drone...
✓ Japan and Hong-Kong are OK. Security agents will just bother you with the LiPo in your carry on bag. Print the international regulation (IATA section 2.3.5.9) and have it with you during security checks
    ✓Bali in Indonesia is ok
    ► 4. Middle East
    ► 5. Africa
X Morocco can take your drone at the customs. You may need a filming permit.
X Kenya seems to take the wrong route. Flying in national parks is forbidden and entry with a drone seems to be challenging
    ► 6. Oceania & Pacific

    ✓ Australia is ok
    ✓ New Zealand is ok

    Black list: Uzbekistan, Morocco
White list: Most Europe (EU), USA, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Bahamas, Bali, Japan, Hong Kong, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand

No idea but please, let us know. However I really don't think iceland should be a problem. This country is very "civilized" and educated and the worst thing would be to pay a custom tax upon entry.

Iceland are the only ones that gutted their bankers and imprisoned them after the financial collapse.
I would call (from someone else’s phone) and ask about bringing it rather than chancing it but I would wager Iceland would be no problem.
They seem a bit smarter than most.
The importation of various types of telephonic and communications equipment is subject to a permit from the Post and Telecom Administration. Equipment requiring such permit includes cordless phones, remote control devices for toys and radio transmitters and receivers not intended for regular broadcasting reception. However, a permit is not required if a traveler imports one GSM mobile phone.

I haven't traveled outside the US, but TSA did a double take last time I took the blackout on a domestic flight.

Seriously!! I can't believe they let you take a pic of the Xray machine. LOL. I've pulled my phone out in the security line before and been threatened to confiscate it!!

I have been good to go at all U.S. locations with the TBS and LiPo's, but they usually stop me, so make sure you plan some extra time into your itinerary for the drug/explosive material screening. I've even gotten the pat down before b/c of it. Also, holidays are a really busy time and depending on the airport they may be extra diligent (small airports and a choice few larger ones too like MSP). I fly out of ATL often and almost NEVER get a second glance.

They were pissed I took the photo but whatever. TSA is a joke.

Lol, I'm surprised they let you take a pic of the X-ray machine ! TSA are usually good, they only care for explosives and will do the explosive swipe test on your LiPo most of the time. I would suggest to print the TSA regulation and have it with you during security screening:

    http://phmsa.dot.gov/safetravel/batteries
    http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/..._batteries.pdf

Long story short you can bring as much LiPo as you want in your carry on bag if the LiPo are less than 8 grams of equivalent lithium content (ELC), which is equal to about 100 watt-hours.

You can arrive at the number of watt-hours your battery provides if you know how many milliamp hours and volts your battery provides: mAh/1000 x V = wh

So let’s try to calculate that with the largest TBS battery, the 4500 mAh 4S LiPo:
4500/1000 x 14.8 = 66.6 wh We are well under the 100 wh that correspond to 8 gram equivalent lithium content of the US DOT.

If you want to take your drone into Morocco you need a authorization from this company. That's what they say at customs.
