Outlook for the crosshair antenna is grim as well. I can't seem to get good circularity and proper SWR. The rotary reactor has simulated well, but is way to fragile to ship... ACK! I can't win...

Working on a better CP patch at the moment...

I don't have a product question as of yet - but I would like to see what planes you are flying and their sizes - maybe when you get time to do a quick thread or 2 on them.

I have just received my antennas from you and they look awesome! I just have 1 question regarding the 2.4ghz 5turn helical I have. Is it OK to drill a hole or 2 through the metal baseplate for mounting? Will that cause any problems?

You can do that, no problem so long as it is near the corners of the reflector plate and not dead center of the antenna.

While I wait for my 5.8g system to arrive from HK I am building IBCrazy's Skew Planar Wheel for my vRX and his Cloverleaf for the vTX. Can I assume that the higher up I mount the ground antenna the better? I was thinking of building some kind of telescoping tower to get it up higher on the ground.

    thanks

In general, yes. This helps clear the Fresnel zone. However it is not nearly as necessary with the CL/SPW combo as it is with linear antennas. Don't over think it. Just take your time and make them very precisely. Then just place them where it is convenient. That's what I do.

If you have questions, feel free to ask. I am here for you guys whether you buy from me or not.

What is the estimated db of my 6 turn 2.4 helical? Also - at 500mw what "average" range should I expect?

A 6 turn helix is about 10db or so. As for average range... 8 miles maybe? Depends on your noise floor and how well you do at setting up your system.

I think this will be my new primary antenna after a few range tests w/ the Cercom patch and this one side by side. I'll grab a second recorder and record 1 flight from each - and then I'll compare. Then I'll fly across them close in and see if I can find the edges of each. It'll be much harder to find the top edge by overflying the beam, but that's less important to me. Stay tuned.

Flying across the antenna will not give you an accurate measurement. The helical will win hands down. Why? A patch loses it's circularity as you get ot to the peripherals. A helical does not do that.
