    Newbie Z3 Build Log

This is my first wing build, so bear with me. I hope my experiences are useful to somebody, but I also wanted to provide some encouragement to folks who might not have much experience with this stuff. I had a Z2XL that I got from another guy, and I beat it up pretty badly whilst experimenting a while back. The electronics were fine, so I decided to try and build a new plane from scratch. The Z3 looked super appealing, in part because of the large internal bays. I had a struggle with the Z2 because it didn't have enough room, and I butchered it up pretty badly trying to squeeze in too much stuff.

Anyway, I jumped on this and here we go.

I'm planning to use my RVOSD 5.1 and DragonLink. I have a 2.4 and 1.3 vTX, and I'm leaning towards 1.3 because I use that on my multi rotors, too. And I have a new IBCrazy pepperbox that I think will be awesome. I have a Turnigy Dlx 70A ESC and a NTM 35-42A 1250Kv 600W motor with a 10x5 Graupner e-prop. I got Ritewing's servos as part of the kit I ordered. And I have the new Toughbay Z3H3 for my flight cam and GoPro. I think that's it, right? :-)

I dove in today, and here's where I'm at so far...

As suggested in the other build logs, I laid out the tubes and SF spars and cut them to fit. Then I taped up the wing to make sure things were aligned.

After some trimming and fiddling, I went ahead and left the CF spars inside of the tubes and glued in the tubes with CA, being careful to avoid the ends of the tubes so the spars wouldn't get stuck inside! After letting things set up (with a little kicker for good measure) I went ahead and tested it. Success!

Next moved on to trimming and gluing the little fiberglass spars on the top and bottom. Pinned them in with 'T' pins and it worked great.

Now that the superstructure is in, I'm gonna have my first Gorilla Glue experience. Wish me luck!

That paint looks awesome, I know it's not done but this is the first black Z3 I've seen. Nice.

Also looks cool with the nose chopped for the Toughbox

Got some more work done today. I cut and monokote'd the elevons.

The old guy at my local hobby shop gave me a great idea for cutting channels in the EPP. He sold me a $2 brass tube, and told me to cut the ends of it with my Dremel, and then use it as a hand drill. Works great!

Finally, I started lam'ing the fuse and wings. Man, that's hard work! Got one wing and most of the fuse done, then I ran out of time.

Thanks, CK! I've been muddling along...attached one of my elevons backwards, so I had to re-do it. LMAO. I'll get there eventually.

BTW, what temp do you guys run your lamming iron at? I am using about 225F or so, and it seems to be going really, really slowly. But I'm afraid to go too high.

So, you're naming it the "Frankenwing", right? I'm loving this design!
