I've been through a few ground stations. My first one was an RX and whip antenna on a NERF dart box that I found lying around () and modded it to fit the application... FPV!

Next, while I tested out 5.8 GHz I used the inbuilt RX in the Predators. After that when I tested out 1.3 GHz I used a patch antenna on a small tripod with the RX and battery on the back, ready to be plugged into the goggles.

Later on I upgraded from that and added in a DVR and put it all in a box.

First tested the stock whip antenna

...and then installed an 8dbi patch!

(the rolled up piece of paper at the top is where I kept a copy of my HAM license)

I also found a carbon tube to put the patch antenna in the right position. If this was too far forward I also brought a ruler that made it point up more.

...then I got out of FPV for a while after selling off my entire setup, did some more LOS flying and what not... a few months later I built a new ground station and put together my 2nd FPV PopWing. This ground station was simple but pretty sweet! I got hooked on FPV again, sold this setup below and now am working on a 910 MHz ground station...

The GS below is no more than a RMRC 8'' monitor, 1.3 GHz vRX on the back, stock whip antenna and a 1300 mAH 3S to power it all.

It’s what I consider a backpack hybrid GS as the main unit fits into the pack but the speaker stand and pepperbox 1.3ghz antenna are carried over the shoulder. Of course it can become a full backpack transportable unit by swapping out the pepperbox for a smaller CP or patch antenna. All wires were hand made from shielded cables using AV or USB 3.0 wire. Case mounting clamps are adjustable from 1", 1.5" and 2" allowing install on camera tripod or speaker stand with ease. Fatshark 5.8ghz installed for wireless goggles.

Looks like a under ground station Adroc3905, like the VTx box with the fan. Nice!

If I have to ask I probably can't afford one but, what do these go for?

It all depends on what you need in there. The cheapest FPV type pro rig we've created was around 1800 Euros, but with a fully outfitted solid state i3-i5 PC, sunlight readable monitor, 300-400Wh of balance charged Li-Pos, dual diversity video with TBC, direct LR R/C, autopilot modem, all connectors IP67, and all the bells and whistles, it would probably be between 3500-5000 Euros. It's a highly modular design, so upgrading or replacing parts later is not a problem. We build them all to custom specifications, so the client decides. Because they save at least 3000-4000 Euros by NOT having to buy a rugged Toughbook for the autopilot and telemetry functions like with all other pro GCS, it's pretty much a slam dunk. It was very much a surprise for me that there is quite a bit of interest of buying these for generic rugged field PC purposes, of course, without the UAV functions with a slightly different control panel.

    Me too, heres' mine!
It does not get heavy, after using it for 5 minutes (with) the
neck strap (required), your muscles will get use to it!
(dont let others tell you its heavy, fly and forget!).

    Its fun this way!
