Shipping / Import / Customs / Tax experience Thread

    Hey guys,

I thought it might be a good idea to create this thread where people can report on their experience with ordering from the TBS online shop which ships from HK.
The idea is that, if you have already received a package from TBS, that you post here where you ordered to, how long it took and how your local customs dealt with the package, i.e. how much extra tax / duties you had to pay.

Hopefully this will give other customers a better idea what to expect when buying from TBS and what to look out for etc. I can imagine that Trappy and his crew would appreciate that info as well.

I for one still haven't ordered yet and actually wonder if it would be better to buy from one of their EU resellers. All tough they tend to be more expensive than TBS, one can also expect less custom duties, at least in the EU.

Well, really looking forward to your experience.

    - Max

I have had great experience's from Hong Kong. I was very nervous the first time I paid over $2000 to somebody's Pay-Pal account. I have had 4 shipment's so far and each one shipped and was delivered to Atlanta Georgia in 3 days. I did not believe it at first, but the next two were the same way. Only problem I had was I had to pay a Import duty fee on one shipment from UPS of $34 but the other three had no fees. I heard it had something to do with the number of lines on your shipping invoice I believe Trappy has this fixed now. I actually ordered a part from Atlanta Hobby and TBS on the same day and got the Atlanta Hobby part 3 days later and its was in the same state.

    Xaser,

I have ordered and had 4 or 5 packages shipped from TBS in Hong Kong. When you place your order and all parts are in stick your package will ship in a few days. Sometimes people will place orders and it takes days or weeks to ship due to backlogs from previous out of stick items. TBS has great customer service and has always been very responsive.

If you can find a EU retailer that has everything you need in stock, then it is no problems to order through them. Finding retailers that have everything you need will be the hard part.

TBS is a trustworthy company. They are shipping thousands of units and doing a great job. Just be prepared to wait if some components are not in stock. I waited several weeks for my Disco to ship after I ordered it and it was worth it.

Just my own experience, although one or two other U.K. Flyer's have had similar issues, I ordered the TBS Disco Pro batch 2 late October I think, When the UPS guy delivered it, he was asking for 88 on the doorstep, Big chunk of that was Import Duty, But what got my Goat was the fact that UPS were charging me 13 to collect it for the Tax man, As it was , Even after paying all that & adjusting for exchange rates, it still worked out a little (20) cheaper to get it from HK than from a local retailer (who didn't have them in stock anyway & wouldn't let me pre-order), A month or two later, I ordered some Bulletproofs from TBS & had them sent via the Singpost option, Post office here stung me for 20, 11 of which was their "collection fee". lost out a bit there, I Hasten to Add that none of this is the Fault of TBS, Whose customer service has been Superb Throughout.

    Just my Tuppence worth.

Thanks for the replies so far, the different experiences you made are very interesting!

@Guru: It must be great in the U.S. where you don't have to worry about VAT

@kpaine: I don't question that TBS is a legit vendor, I worry more about what happens at the customs

@LabMonkey: What value did the first order have, I'm suprised he "only" wanted 88GBP. Considering the value of the stuff that I'm about to order, I will have to pay like 200€ VAT, which almost ruins the exchange rate completly. That's why it's already cheaper for me to buy from UAVWorks, a reseller in the netherlands, eventhough I'm ordering to germany.. Its more expensive there but not as expensive as from HK with VAT (and whatever other duties)

Hi Max, was about $1000 USD, however, the customs label value was about half that, I believe you can put what value you want on it in the checkout section, might be on a sticky wicket insurance -wise if they lost it though.

Same here, from date of shipment it is around 3 days!, but as mentioned you have to wait for items to come into stock which can be a pain. I am a local retailer for TBS products here in the USA, in fact I ship all over the USA but I do run out of stock very fast and it is hard most times to keep a stock level. Any dealer will tell you the same...

I like others pay the extra for the 3 day shipping, UPS always charge us a "Brokerage Fee", which is BS because they do not open the box, they do not know what is in the box yet still charge us for the Itemised "Brokerage Fee".

Most times when I order, I can expect a 2 week wait... This time I did order some more specialised much wanted equipment, so I am expecting a huge delay on the whole shipment.

I have 100% trust in TBS and their products, when placing $2000 plus orders, you have to have some trust.. lol

My latest order for everything in stock is still not shipped eight days later, no idea what is going on and have had no response for a request for an update. Most of my other orders have been very good though.

I still have not received the shipment, It's been a week without getting update request. I have read on the forum that are having delays in shipping, still be parts in stock . I'd imagine something specific.
But I'm sure throughout this week will be sent
As soon as I receive it I will comment taxes or problems.
