In that article there was this as one of the apparent rules for flying drones in the US:

Must be "operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community-based organisation"

Is that really the case? Sounds like something the AMA would hope?

So I guess that fpvlab should make a set if "safety" guidelines since where a nationwide (actually global) based organization.... lol. We can come up with better rules that aren't so dinosaur like.

Can drones appeal to the masses?

A good article from a mass market consumer perspective. Thanks for sharing.

That is one of the rules to qualify for the exemption from FAA regulation set forth in the Re-authorization Act. But since the rules it exempts you from don't yet exist, there is no need to comply with the rules to qualify for the exemption.

Can drones appeal to the masses?

These mass market devices won't actually be piloted aircraft, they're flying cameras. People won't fly them, the cameras will fly themselves.

You base your interpretation on the current climate, but this technology is evolving at a dramatic pace and this is just the very early stage (early adopter). We are only starting to understand the potential.

This is not the hobbyist or commercial market that is the subject of this article, rather, it is an anticipated mass market.

Who knows what regulations may or may not apply to that type of device in the future?

How long? Perhaps within the next year. Who can saying it will even be realized at this stage? It is more of an idea at this point, a mere vision.

The Hubsan X4 FPV nano quadcopter is close to the form of what a mass market flying camera might look like in form:

Make it stream and be controllable from a smart phone, add gimbal or software smoothing, and make it fly itself and there you have it.

Or maybe it'll look like this flying ball UAV:

Or maybe like this robotic Dragonfly from Georgia Tech:
