Passed the technician test with flying colors; took the general test for the hell of it and scored 18 of 35. I didn't even studying for the general test; I'll study for a few months and take the test again.

Should have studied for the General while studying for Tech. There's roughly an 80% overlap in material.

Pay the fee, if any, one time. Take tests until you fail. If you fail you can pay again to continue.

Spouse and daughter are licensed, so yes. Alternate comms for crowed events, and for when hiking or other activity outside of normal cellular coverage. I have my General, they're both Technicians. I haven't been able to afford an HF radio since I got licensed, so still haven't been on HF, but I help provide event support (parades, runs, rides, etc), and I'm wanting to get CERT certified.

Same here, going to join a club here in Vegas and attend their monthly meetings to get up to speed along with meeting folks.
