Connect USB and power from main battery at the same time?

I was about to configure my tinyosd's current sensor. And I just wanted to double-check, since I've fried way too many things in the past, that I can have the USB from a laptop plugged into the OSD board, at the same time I'm powering it from the copter's main battery. Is that okay to do?

The step by step instructions make me think it's okay, but I wanted to make sure.

    Thanks!

Yes you can do that. When you calibrate it, you have to connect the main battery and USB at the same time.
Instead of a multimeter I used the Turnigy 130A Watt Meter to get the correct current and voltage readings for calibration.

Be cautious about doing this. Check your BEC or other 5v source that is powering your OSD from the plane, and make sure it does not exceed 5v. I had an issue where plugging the USB into my powered OSD (or even plugging the flight battery in after USB was connected) made my computer immediately hard power-off.. not a proper shutdown, just boom - black screen.

Turns out the BEC was providing 5.9v to the OSD, and when the USB was connected, it back-fed into the PC, overloaded the USB bus, and the laptop went into an "oh shit!" emergency overload protection power-off.

No long term damage, but it is something to be aware of. As long as your BEC is at 5.0v or very close to it, you should be fine.
Far better is it to dare mighty things, even though checkered by failure; than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Great insight guys. Thanks for your answers. I now have a calibrated osd!

The rssi percentage is upside down but it's better than nothing. :-)

    Thanks!

My RSSI was also upside down the first time, and I couldn't figure out why. Later on I calibrated it again and somehow it came right. Try it the other way around, with your Tx on for the low value and Tx off for the high value, see if that fixes it.

Thanks Johan. The thread where you talked about all that originally was a good one, I read all the way through it. But I still can't get it rightside up. I'll try again and see what happens.
