Just putting out the feelers to see if anyone near El Centro in sunny southern California wants to join up when i do some FPV out by the off road park northwest of El Centro. The dates i'll be out there are the 21-22nd and the 28-29th to see how well the autopilot unit works out, as well as if someone else wants to do some formation flying.

I was out there last October and didn't have the osd or the goggles. Need to get back out there especially when the temps won't be over 100 this time. Almost couldn't charge batteries with the temp alarm shutting down the charger.

The park is just off of Huff rd turning onto Wheeler, just west of Seeley. Might get a chance of following some motorcycles going up the hills and getting an idea how far the video will work without much airspace limitations.

man, your going close to alot better spots than that..... glamis is 45 minutes east, largest sand dune complex in north america. west of El Centro is an area called Plaster City off of is80 near teh marker plaster city on the maps. it's where alot of the FMX guys do freestyle motocross jumping in vids. has these 30-100 foot natural ramps all over the place. couple small sand hills way back in the park. pole line roads. I was just down there east of glamis last weekend. it was 105 but suppose to cool back to the 80's this week. temps can vary this time of year, people were still few and far between in the desert, all the mobile vendors are gone. this time of year is the transition form desert to the river, last trip for most to the desert is spring break, river season starts memorial weekend, then Halloween it flips back to desert season.

I just got back from Kingman Az last weekend, but doing alot of flying in the afternoon over by Superstition mountain. The first place i went out to was Plaster city and lost the little electric plane overnight trying to fly out to the power lines and back. Just wasted the two lipo batteries and no damage at all, lucky.

I'm going to try to make it out to Glamis on Sunday just before the sun rises and try to catch the first light in the hd cam over the dunes, winds should be calm about that time.

I've been able to get a couple hours worth of video but no means to post it until i get back up north, the internet situation really sucks around here at the hotel and have to fight with 10 other people at work to check on the forums. Really surprised at how well the video is turning out with the cheap walmart special Midland hd cam. Just shot another 6 videos yesterday afternoon into the evening hours, should turn out great.

Thats right were i'm talking about, awesome. i drive by glamis on the way to the colorado river and keep blowing through without a flight, can't wait to see what all you come up with

just so it was said, the area directly east, west and north of hwy 78 at glamis is all Live Fire Proving Grounds. if ya fly over there, theres a pretty good chance of getting shot at. There always active, and from the ground is a ton of warning signs posted. if you dont see sand dunes under ya, theres a pretty good chance you've gone off course

All this talk about Glamis, i found a break in the wind today while i sit here at work and working a deal with two other co workers about doing a little adventure flying session. One to drive, one to hold the 8Dbi out the passenger window, and i sit in the back with an open side door while flying from west of the dunes and landing over by the main meeting area about 6 miles away. The hd cam will be set to the better setting and hope it all turns out. The Ezosd should tell me how far the total distance should be overall, but the thought of flying straight through the dunes is getting me anxious about getting out there in a couple of hours.

Hope it works out, otherwise i'm packing up tonight for the trip back north a little earlier.

Pretty windy, I don't think my plane can handle it.

Turns out it was gusty winds later on that afternoon and went back over to Superstition Mtn for a final flight. I would have to had tried it in the morning hours but ran out of spare weekends.

For the trip overall, i managed to get some decent flying throughout and still have a bit of footage to go through. Glamis flyover would have been the way to finish it all up.

theres usually no wind at first light till 10am then it blows or it's misserably hot. An hour before sunset it usually goes away again.

Glamis is gods country. if you look at it from the sattelite view on google earth, you get the magnitude and size of the place. You can ride 20-30 miles south, hit 2-3 other sand dune rec areas and be sitting in mexico sippin a cold one. Dunes the whole way. to the north of 78 is closed off by the tree huggers but it keeps going that way too

Well, next time out there in October, hope i'm put on the night shift and i've got a Zephyr or equivalent. With the Uhf system, i don't see having any problem flying from the vendor area all the way to the top and really have some fun out there. Much more portable system and probably be able to fly out of more areas than last time. Going to try to fabricate a portable launch stand for this.

catch my attention before you come and i'll fly it with ya. October the place is in full swing, 100,000 plus people on any give 3 day weekend.

You got it, would be a blast to do a bit of formation while the atv's and motorcycles are zipping through the dunes.

This is one of the last few ultimate spots i've got to fly in before the contract at my job is gone and the trips to Ca come to an end.

Started doing this on the other meeting link, why not post the other Google Earth flight profiles from the EZosd here as well. Just download it, open it, goes directly to google earth.

Salton City - this ones a bit odd, the ezosd didn't calibrate for the 75ft below sea level.

Ocotillo Wells off road area - ran out of fuel early

Got into looking for something else to do and wanted to list all the videos captured while down there onto this thread. Already posted on the airshow thread and wanted to get them centralized. Will keep posting them as they are completed since there was quite a few.

Started off in Kingman -

http://vimeo.com/41209189

Launched the Slo Flyer over by the Superstition mtn off road area -

http://vimeo.com/41804610

This was the final flight for the Slo Flyer over Borrego until it gets rebuilt. There is some additional videos coming from this plane before this flight, to be posted soon. Plaster city was a great place to fly, hope to get it compiled soon.

http://vimeo.com/41940418

Flew twice over at Ocotillo Wells off road area, should have topped off for the second attempt, since it flew for less than 10 minutes.

http://vimeo.com/41813449

Did a short flight at Salton City beachfront, the ezosd showed 0 altitude untill approximately 200 ft up, right where sea level starts. There is an updated video that will get posted tomorrow that integrates the osd view with this.

Just finished up with this yesterday, Vimeo took around 17 hours to convert it over. It was the last flight in El Centro before coming back north and had a blast buzzing the small hilltops. Decided to fly here instead of Glamis due to the gusty winds that started around 2pm, would have been kicking up around 30kts and would have wasted another 100 mile round trip. Got knocked around quite a bit and a heck of a crosswind on both landings. Included some small snips of the osd on takeoff to show the field elevation, shows around 40 Ft below sea level, temp was around 92 F. Never took off the goggles once and the feet kicked up through the entire flight, totally relaxed. Just there to have fun looking for jackrabbits.

This is the latest compilation, finally getting out to the 1 mile mark, flown from Imperial Valley Radio Control Club. Started the flight with the feet kicked up and prayed that i wouldn't lose the video link. Working on extending the video transmission.

Second official mile, or sort of. Turned just shy of the mile by 50 meters just as i realized the battery would not get the plane back. Found it the day after with depleted lipos.
Plaster City, here it is, or there is really nothing out here except small sand piles and a power line at the mile mark...

https://vimeo.com/43514779

Atleast i got the plane back safe and sound. Good thing it landed in a small depression next to a bush otherwise the 25 kt winds would have tossed it across the desert the following day. It was around 95 F.

that's hot. the area where you took off at with all the steep hills is where a zillion FMX videos have been made. Grew up riding everything you flew over since was 5. Dad used to "desert race" there and tagged along my whole life.

our last trip down was 114 degrees and the winds blew 25-35 mph gusting to 50 2 weeks ago. the road in front of glamis looked like the rest of the sand

That entire valley is brutal in the afternoon on most days, was really lucky where the plane was lost. With all the improvements in equipment, looking to do some much longer range flying next time down, especially Glamis!!!

End of Sept to mid Oct... hope the schedule is still on. :)

Sounds like were on for doing some slalom around the sand dunes, temps were around 95 to 15 when i was there last october. Which plane you have for gas? Wouldn't be able to bring any of my larger ones unless i drag a trailer down.

Still have a couple more videos left to compile, one of them was 15 minutes of flying at Plaster City, skimming the tops of the dunes before it went off and got lost.

Dang, you've got some 3d skills - that plane is going to be a blast with a decent video system as long as the radio has the range. Have to see the video from it when you get done. Putting some serious thought into loading the 1/4 scale Waco or Marchetti with a full setup. Got a decent field over there, maybe join up with you there before tackling Glamis.

This is probably one of the last videos taken from the trip.

Cruising around the sandy hills

I was out there not only for the view, had to clear up problems with the video receivers, just about nailed it for the mile out.
