Nice yes that's a 92 250 Kdx, it's one of those limited edition 250 that they did for a few years, I got a little while back, I haven't had a chance to re work it for me and ride it yet, been a little bit too busy. I grew up on the Kdx, and went up to the KX 500, but at this point I think the 250 is perfect for me and my age

I did the same thing a couple minutes before on the tree next to it, but had to pick it out of the brush. If you listen closely, the timing is what saved me. I got to the throttle just as it was upside down and got a chance to rip it back over quickly. A split second later and it would've just nosed into the tree it was going for as it totally lost all airspeed. I could probably make a 5 minute compilation video of branch catches like this that resulted in a crash. I'd say with 90% of them, had I just gotten on the throttle immediately, I could've saved it and kept going. It's my new mission in life, lol. Vigilant response time. Usually I just try to control the impact... Punching the gas seems to work though. Going to be a bit more careful with the Drak... That's for sure.

It's going to be a nice springtime for baby Drak's. Really interested to see all the creativity to come. I think it's a good thing that they're coming in the down time of the year. Perfect for taking the necessary time for a really nice build.

Man Chris, you have your work cut out for you this holiday season; I'd love to join you and pitch in. I don't think the wife would be too happy leaving her home for the holidays alone; I might come back home to a empty house. Not the best timing on the delivery for you; then again; all your hard work is about to pay off. I think I see my Drak sitting right there on the top of those boxes in the bottom pic. ;) Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Mike

For some reason black coroplast it's been very hard to get in 6 millimeter, originally you see on most draks I use red, well there's a reason for it.
If any of the black comes in I will cut some, but . So at this point it's red and silver epp, if you want it black paint them black.

I am not promising any specific color of coro, sorry.
Yeah there is a ton of work here that I'm doing, its looking good guys.

Again it's very hard to offer it, if it's not available., in the beginning I was only able to get a few sheets, and I've been trying ever since. They have a minimum order of 300 sheets to make a run. for some reason there is a ton of red available, so that's what I'm sending out with majority of everything. I'm not going to offer different colors when I don't have the plastic here.

Had a really fun time chasing each other around. Can't wait to do it with Drak's... that's going to be a sight to see from the sky. Finished the video and realized I had our footage in another spot... Would've went nicely. Cannot wait to feel this new wing in the sky. Got a sheet of adhesive backed carbon fiber I'm going to experiment with. The kind you wrap cars with. Might do the plastic, possibly even front wing sections, over a layer of plasti dip. I'll test and see - might look really, really cool. I only look at it when I'm transporting it... But still like it to look sharp. I can already feel how nice this thing is going to fly. Locked in is what I'm expecting. Point and shoot. Happy flying.

Ummmm..... carbon fiber is known to block/interfere with RF transmissions.

May want to verify the wrap, just in case? Does sound awesome though.

It's printed vinyl, but looks legit. 3m makes it. Strictly for aesthetics, but may be able to be used for protection in place of laminate on the leading edges. May look like garbage too... Just an idea.

Awesome! I didn't think I'd have any references to look at. Thanks for that! I'll go check it out. I ordered 2 rolls - the 3M stuff and a like $4 roll - both the same size from Amazon. The 3M is on the right. It has the basic pattern. The cheap one is on the left and it actually looks like CF, down to each individual fiber. The picture kinda blurred the actual detail for some reason, but in person it's almost indistinguishable from real CF. Maybe I'll test on an existing plane to find the better one. Adhesive-wise, 3M usually can't be beat. I think I will leave the openings in the coro open (I usually close them off). I think the CF with the red showing through in the center will look sick.

Yeah pushjerk, very nice indeed.

Also been considering lights on the Drak. Done some night flying before and think it may be fun, as well as having less and less time with having a 3rd spawn, so gaining some hours of possible flight time could help. Used to literally fly every day unless winds were over 20mph or it was raining / snowing... now I'm very lucky if I can get out once a week. Also thinking that spotting it while flying with others might be easy with lights, even in daylight, if you've got an IR sensitive camera. Been looking at el tape. Possibly cutting it and following the contour of the trailing edge of the midwings. Would look like the sublight engines on the Millennium Falcon :) You can literally stick the stuff anywhere and light it up nicely without gaining really any above-the-surface profile / adding drag.

Pretty early. I was one of the Kickstarter orders and then moved to the preorder as soon as Chris changed to that route. My invoice date is way back on April 17th.

Looks like there was a delay getting my Drak to UPS after generating the shipping label and now delivery isn't showing until Monday, although looking at where it presently is in the UPS system, tomorrow isn't out of the question. But for me the UPS estimated delivery dates are usually very accurate, and UPS says Monday.

I have never noticed just how many emails I usually get until now. Overtime I see a new email I check it just to get my hopes dashed. Not a crack at Chris at all. Curious what percentage of "Drakoneers" are in off-season weather (snow, whatever) and plan to wait a bit to be able to fly, versus fly (almost) regardless of weather, versus can fly year round. Not worth a poll really, but a dumb question rattling around in my brain......

It would take a pretty mighty El Nino to make things unflyable out here. Winter is also about the only time we get any reachable clouds in the sky. My Drak ships today according to UPS (I ordered July 19th), so hopefully it should be here by the weekend. I'm caught pants down without the bats and FC I'd like to use though.

Yea, I was in on the kickstarter too then rolled over to pre-order; I was not watching close enough and pre-ordered in June. Anyway, received my shipping notification today; looking like Tuesday for delivery. :) In the mean time, I was able to get out the other day for some flying in 45 degree weather; sunny but cool for Vegas.69126

I do feel what you're saying, but the right batteries from there are pretty decent. I'd recommend zippy if you do. I'd stay away from nano-tech at all costs.

I strive to get quality stuff over any form of junk or uncertainty whenever possible, but there are a few things made / distributed through them that are decent quality, including zippy batteries, their SK3 line of motors and a handful of higher end turnigy servos. The low priced stuff though shouldn't be bought with any hopes of qc.

I use 6S Zippy Compacts in my Cinetank. It pulls at most 40 amps. These are terrible batteries- they sag really bad with any kind of load, and they don't have anywhere near the rated capacity. I fly maybe 1750ma out of these 2700 packs, and they show 80% when done. Should be able to get at least 2100 out of them. I've taken very good care of them, but they have been wimpy since new.

The zippy 8000's have been good to me. I've got several 3s and several 4s. Add far as zippy compact, I once bought a single 3s 2200 that totally sucked and had terrible loading, as described above. I have 3 1300's that I use on a quad that have been really good, so I'm kinda unsure what the huge difference in performance is all about. Because if it though I don't but them any more.

That may be. I can only speak from my experience - certainly can't guarantee for anyone else. I've got a total of 19 zippy's (standard - non "compact") in 2200, 4000 and 8000. 14 get used regularly. 1 has puffed (from abuse), 13 still going strong, 9 (of the ones in active use) are over a year old.

I will say though, if you can / want to afford it, always get the best equipment you can. My philosophy is - buy quality, buy once - buy sht, buy twice. Just so happens I've had a good experience with them as well as the standard turnigy (although have a couple really old ones that are puffed) tatu, lumenier & thunder power. Bad experience with nano-tech & zippy compact.

I have a pair of Trunigy 4s 4000's that are 6 years old now. You would never know, they're the same as when I bought them. I use them on my Ranger and Hexa.

That is my exception with them, though. I had 3s's that were terrible..

Same with zippy and nano,,, good/bad luck. Seems to be who was on the assembly line
that day type thing.

Of these 3 I can deffinately say I have destroyed more of them than have been good long lasting type of thing.

If the bird was a floater like my Ranger I'd take my chances. This isn't like that, you can get a lot of performance out of her, so demand is higher.

GensAce was my go-to, but they are hard to come by.

Once I launch this thing for the first time I'll be able to tell how much more weight I can reasonably put in it. I am in favor of flying on the heavier side rather than lighter for 2 reasons. Heavier is generally faster, to a point, and wind is rarely non-existent. Planes that I have that are featherweights are un-flyable (or just not fun at all) on average 10mph days. My heavier stuff can handle it no problem without being constant work just to keep on track. Don't get me wrong, the Drak is no featherweight - she's big and can probably handle a ton of cargo. If I find I'd like to throw a little more weight in it, I'll invest in some nice batteries. Probably will regardless as I only have 3x 5S's at the moment. I like to bring at least 4 or 5 to the field.

Guys.. If you are looking for quality, you can't go wrong with the Revolectrix HV. Exhaustive and extensive tests by MCSGuy on RCGroups put them near the very top of the list against the best. I've been flying them on my Z3 (2x 5500 4S) and love their performance. I ordered the 435 30C 4600 5S for the Drak. They have 15% off till the 2nd right now, so it's an even better deal than what I got on Black Friday.

After a good look round the UK I came up with x6 Zippy 4000mAh 5s 20c, the reason for this is it will give me 8000mAh for 940 grams which is in the "target weight" and all of Chris's airframes I've had can take a few more grams for distance flying. With this in mind I can then try x3 packs if needed to give me 12000mAh for 1400grams, the 8000mAh packs are listed as 1054 grams each and you would be pushing it to put a pair at 2108grams. Just trying to keep my options open and see what this beastie will carry and still fly sweet for duration/distance flying.

good idea.. I've used zippy compacts in quads in the past and they all puffed after a few flights but never tried the plain zippys.
I've been using desire power batts since and really happy with them, they do 5s but limited sizes.
might try a couple of zippys to start with, at that price it's not a huge gamble.

Totally agree with you on weight, I fly a fully fpv loaded penguin with a 10000 mah 4S multi star which is like a brick but she handles really well and rock solid if the wind picks up. Take offs can be exciting at times but it's worth the 40 min + flight times

My 250 Zippy compacts are puffed after a season of abuse, just run them and not that fushed about how much is left after a flight. The Z3 run's 6400mAh 4s 20c and I always leave 20%, never been over that and they are as fresh as the day I had them and I stopped counting mid summer at 100+ flights, this is why I went with the Zippys for the Drak, will see how these last?

Hi guys, some info on the 3M carbon wrap i used on my Z3....

I bought the Di-Noc and 1080 Scotchprint (now just called 1080 i believe), i ended up using the 1080 version as it is more malleable and a touch thinner which makes it a lot easier to work around edges with a little hot air, also it is the best for exterior use

Both versions have non-visibal air release channels for bubble free installation, also they use pressure activated adhesive which can be applied and relifted to get things lined up and then the use of a spreader with a little pressure really sticks it in place but it can be easily removed with a little hot air

Been checking into the Drak thread every few days as i hope to order myself one in the near future as they look like a fantastic airframe :)

Here is a info photo i pulled from the web before i purchased my wrap....

Either. I imagine steel will last much longer, but as long as the nut is steel, nylon screws can just be replaced as needed. I picked up some at home depot today, but they're not exactly what I'm looking for. I was looking for more of a barrel-type nut rather than the flared ones I found that take up a lot of space, but I'm willing to look at anything if you have suggestions. Thanks.

Hello Drakonians,
Newb here, just wanted to learn from people more experienced. Is it absolutely required to laminate this plane? The finish, color and curves are beautiful. I,ve never laminated before and I know I'll mess it up. Is laminate removable if needed? Also what brand of color spray is appropriate so it would not damage the surface finish? Is PlastiDip safe? I would just get something strong for the underside and some 2 spray colors for stripes and accents.
Please share your experieces or techniques.

Thanks.

You don't need to laminate anything, but you should at least laminate the elevons for stiffness. Plastidip is safe. Other paints won't stick to the EPP. Also be sure to use the right combinations of glues as Chris emphasizes in the build videos. Look at the build videos several times. Its very specific and detailed.

Personally I will paint and laminate leading and trailing edges of wings, elevons and some bottom areas to avoid scratches during landing. Laminate can easily be removed. Don't worry about lack of experience with laminating. Its not difficult.

Building the plane however seems to require some knowhow and skills to get right. If you don't consider yourself a skilled builder you should be extra diligent following instructions to avoid getting into trouble. Main focus should be getting everything straight and strong.

Agreed with Havard. Laminating the elevons is a must if you plan to use the epp ones that come with the kit. Chris's build videos (2) on the Drak are some of the most detailed that I've seen and will answer most questions. Most manufacturers put out "now glue in the spars", Chris walks you through every step, including what glue to use and when. I would note that gorilla glue can get very messy and can quickly get out of control if not used correctly. I would test some junk materials if you've never used it to familiarize yourself with its curing actions if you plan to follow that procedure. Providing the surfaces are scuffed properly, you may be able to skip that step and get away with goop if you're not comfortable with it, although I'd leave it to Chris to say whether it's absolutely necessary or not to follow that step, as its his plane. Other than that specific portion, the videos take you all the way and should help with any doubt. Goop is slow to cure and easily smoothed out, so don't worry about messing that up. Hot glue cures fast, but can be released with alcohol, so the game isn't over if you mess something up or don't act quick enough. Other than that, relax, take your time and practice any step that you're not familiar with on scrap until you're confident enough to move on to the production build. Oh, and the most important part - have fun... That's why we're here :) Good luck.

Our company is using several Ritewing`s UAVs (8) for 6 different applications. We are excited as our pre-order DRAKS will be shipped very soon. We have nothing but the greatest comments about Chris Klick. He is knowledgeable, helpful and he goes beyond his duty to keep clients happy. Our fix wing fleet includes eight Ritewing´s UAV´s among some others that just cannot compete with Ritewing´s ones. The DRAK has risen a lot of attention from at least two gov. agencies on this side of the world. Thanks Chris.

Also, if you do mess up or otherwise attempt to remove laminate for any reason, make sure it's heated before you try to lift it. Trying to pull it cold will end up pulling up a lot more than you anticipated and your epp will look like the surface of the moon. There's been some stuff that I've had sent to me as part of kits that would come right up, but any decent lam will grip like mad and needs to be reheated either with an iron, hair dryer or heat gun before removing.

Awesome... on that note, first decent flying weather today in like almost three weeks. Took the Z3 out for some lazy, brisk (45F) cool weather flying. It was super calm out, and just had a ball floating around on 7-13 amps and enjoying how well this bird flies. Tried out the new Eagletree V2 GPS and a temp sensor on the ESC- the GPS is amazing (18-20 sats all day and instant lock) and the temp sensor is a nice add-on for those hot summer days.

Hey PrJoe what has worked really well for me in the past is to pick up some Top Flite or Hangar 9 (don't remember) white, black or red pinstriping. I forget what it's actually called but you should be able to find it at your local hobby store. You can also pick up carbon fibre (fake) pinstriping from hardware stores. Usually that stuff is used for car detailing, but it works like a charm and i use it to give the leading edge of my wings a bit more durability. You can apply all of these things on top of 5 mil clear laminate. Make sure you pick up a laminate iron (regular iron really doesn't work well) and once you start laminating you'll never go back. Start with your iron at half-way heat setting -- better too cold than too hot. There are lots of videos out there that can show you how to laminate, but start from the center of your wing and iron outwards. Cut your laminate several times around corners to keep wrinkles out -- don't worry about edges as they disappear when they stick together.

My Drak arrived today in good shape via UPS. Packing was excellent and well thought out, like a 3D puzzle. Box was much smaller than I expected at 38" x 17" x 7.5". Wings looked straight with no apparent warpage.

First impressions:

- The thing looks smaller than I expected. I even laid it out and measured the wingspan. I think it's because the fuselage is so honking big the wings look stubby by comparison.

- Yeah, really big fuselage. You can cram all sorts of stuff in it. That's probably bad, because I will.

- The silver EPP looks excellent. I've only ever seen white before, and this looks much better. And the stuff seems REALLY solid.

- Fit of the pieces appears excellent. This kit looks to have been molded to very high precision.

- Can't say I'm a fan of the red coroplast now that I see it. I was thinking it would be just the fin/skids but it's also all the bay covers. That's a lot of red. So I may hunt around for black or another color and cut my own or just paint it.

Now to figure out what to do with it.....

Yeah, not a fan of the red coro. However, painting the hatch covers and covering with tape works well. Can try with the fins/skids, should work fine. I can get black coro, but not in that thickness. Plus its a pain cutting it out by hand.

I'll probably just paint the covers and leave the fins red

Yes, most of them are virtually identical. As far as uv resistance, marine, auto & rv and max have inhibitors, all purpose, straight automotive, craft, household and e6000 don't. The max smells different though... Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing... But it claims to never yellow even in constant sun exposure, which I've seen all purpose do with outside applications. Been using them all for a long time :) For regular rc stuff, they can all certainly be used interchangeably. This stuff says it holds up in constant sun. I'll test it outside to see if it lives up to it. Some of the others can stain and split after a while of constant exposure.

If you throttle management maybe, but don't blow your s*** up. you might have to prop down if you start running higher in the throttle, you don't want to pull much more than 60 amps on this motor. I see with my setup it pulls about 58 amps or so wide open. I also found that this plane does not like to fly on smaller propellers, so you might have to choose what you like best.

Yaba Daba Doo!! The drak has landed!! Even better customs have been nice and let it through without any charges.

Very well packaged Chris, all present and correct with no damage. Neat trick hot glueing the spars to the box inside. I had forgotten about the canards too, interested to see what everyone does with them, personally I think I will leave them off just now. Think I will spray the coro covers black though but leave the verts red.

All in all a mighty fine and sexy looking ship and well worth the wait!

Fantastic job Chris....absolutely delighted........let the build commence!!!
Nice I'm very glad you like it, there's been a lot of effort put into this aircraft

5S it is! I've setup planes on the "throttle mgmt" system and it's no fun. I'd rather have the security of knowing I won't burn my motor up if I need to gas it. Thanks

Hey chris, talked to you on the phone the other day about the bulk buy. You can put me down for 2 8500's. Got my drak prototype from stone blue today. What a machine.

I'm not Chris, but - electric. Sport are typically for tractor-driven glow models. They're thicker, heavier, have a larger hub and are much less efficient. Meant to handle all the vibrations that glow put out.
