What is the new 1300kv motor/esc you've ordered?

ritewing

It's a new motor of mine. It's an efficient little monster. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/16/upavy7uz.jpg . It's crazy power for the weight, and super efficient. It has curved magnets and Japanese bearings.

ritewing
15th August 2014, 11:55 PM
What color, if it is blue it's good, but it's not the new ones I just ordered

Hmerly
16th August 2014, 12:07 AM
Yeah, it was blue. What are the specs on this one?

ritewing
16th August 2014, 12:28 AM
its the 1300 or 1400 kv, we use an 80 amp esc on all our Zephs.
On the 1300 and 1400 we use 8/4 8/6 9/5 and a 10/5 non folders

As far as spex what do you want to know, its either a 35 15 or 35 20 in size, they both work well.
We have used them extensively.
The motors I just ordered have been tested for a little while , I wanted to put them through the paces on the new plane before committing an order. The blue ones have been used for a while in various sizes.

Hmerly
16th August 2014, 12:33 AM
thats enough. I've got a 100amp and 60amp esc. What do you recommend? The 100 is a bit large for the little spot in front of the motor mount

ritewing
16th August 2014, 12:36 AM
If you stay 9/5 OR under the 60 mite work. I always over rate by at least 20%. The 60 is cutting it close in my opinion. But that's me always, over kill on the esc

Hmerly
16th August 2014, 12:37 AM
The 100 it is then. Just gotta figure out how I'm going to fit it in there and still be able to close the hatch. Shouldn't be too much trouble

ritewing
16th August 2014, 12:40 AM
After you gorilla glue the rear spar you can always cut down the hump.

wyll
16th August 2014, 05:40 PM
Hay what is the biggest prop that will fit on the Z3?

ritewing
16th August 2014, 06:05 PM
Hey buddy commonly we use the 8/6 8/7 9/5 9/6 , a 10/5 works, but mite torque some depending on you all up weight.
The 8 and nines work best for crisp non torque flying. We have also gone 7/5 on 1800 kv on 3s and 4s with awesome results, so pick your poison!
We use the 10/5 on the utility planes that are only cruising at 250 to 45 knots. Its never getting pushed that hard.
The wing is only 47 wing span so it doesn't need the prop to be bigger than the plane!

wyll
16th August 2014, 06:22 PM
ok. How do you think a 1180 kv motor with a 10x4.7 prop would work with maybe 3 3s 2200mah batteries?

Ok. I currently run that setup on my juggernaut but with 2 2200 and a 9x6 prop. I have a 1400kv motor somewhere to I think so if I get a Z3 maybe all use that. Would a 11" prop fit on the Z3 or is there not room?

Ya it should fit, but why would you want a prop that big, it mite cause poor handling, it is only 47 inches in wing span, are flying a plane or prop?

I want to go as efficient as possible (long flight times, low speed, stable), so what do you recommend for motor/prop?
And you don't recommend folding props? Why?
Thank you!
Steve

XtremeWingRC
18th August 2014, 05:19 PM
Folding props are expensive and most of the time the normal props (apc) will find it's way out of the grass and neutral itself aligned with the aircraft from grass or whatnot pushing on it. With ritewing demons, TL fitty's and other wings...I still haven't snapped a prop. Plus the z3 s has coroplast verts that rub on landing so it saves your prop and helps it out I suppose.

Chris can you elaborate on the folders?

Kris thanks for the update on the motors. I will go by the other info you've posted regarding recommendations. I have 38" and 42" EPP flying wings but I'm excited that the forward-fuselage of the Z3 allows for less weight and larger wing area while being easy to transport and hand launch on my own. And that last part is critical for those of us who mainly fly solo. WOT and CHUCK IT is all that I ask for in a wing launch.

No problem! He also recommends mounting to the bracket by the bell, and not end-mounting the motor, to reduce prop vibration and help get just a little more weight forward. Not all motors can be mounted that way so keep it in mind.

I would think the same power package recommended for the ZII would suffice. This is a little narrower and should rip with that setup.

OMG OMG OMG. My Z3 has landed in NZ. That is insanely fast shipping thankyou Chris. It's a Friday here. I'm back to work tommorrow. So the other half will get the package at the door, if it gets put out for Saturday delivery, or I'll collect it Monday/Tuesday next week.

Today was a good day... My Z3 took flight and all went well. Had a bit of trimming to do and my initial landing was a wee bit more bumpy than I'd like but really wasn't too bad. Had a flying buddy with me who took a little line of sight footage that I used to make the following video. Just a little documentation of my Z3's first take off and first few low passes (also got the bumpy landing in there at the end)...

http://youtu.be/JaB8FMFhtjo

I really really liked how stable the plane seemed to be once I got it trimmed a bit. One thing I haven't got setup correctly and figured out yet is the high/med/low rates settings on my radio along with the elevon mixing. I've got a Taranis feeding ezUHF in this bird and I seem to have my high/med/low rates working properly when I use move the stick to adjust the ailerons (I can see increased/reduced throws in the elevons if I only give aileron inputs). But... if I am giving rudder inputs, the high/med/low settings don't seem to change the elevon deflections at all. Guess I got some testing/reading to do in order to get that fixed.....

Surprises on their way to NZ

"Surprises on their way to NZ" he says. Hmmmmmm had myself and a m8 wondering what "Surprises" could mean. Whether that was the Z3 itself, or whether there was a little something extra included.

Well, let me tell you, what ever I was thinking was small in comparison to the ACTUAL SURPRISE.

The story unfolds like this.

I was at work, and I got an email notification saying that my Z3 had been delivered. I thought shit, typical bloody postal service in NZ, just dropping a large box off at your door. I was not due to finish for several hours and didn't want to take the chance that the parcel would get flogged from the front door,so I got a hold of a m8 who kindly jumped in his car and shot over to my place, and collected "The BOX".

Started to breathe again. Then I get a text and the conversation goes like the following.
M8 = " It seems to have multiplied in the mail"
ME = " Huh..?"
m8 = " There is 2 of them"
Me = " No ****en way"
M8 = "Yes ****en way"
me = " Your shitting me, taking the piss"
m8 = " Nope there are 4 wings and 2 fuses"
me = " Oh shit..!! "
m8 = "That would be an acceptable response"
Me = " Ummmm I don't know what to do now"
m8 = " Well he did say SURPRISES"

So I msg'd Chris from Ritewing, as I was a little bit taken back by this. I thought maybe the boxes had been mixed up, and I had received someone else's dual order. I got a msg back from Chris within a few minutes, and it simply blew me away.

"Because you need to have fun, now go build and fly them.
Thnx for the support way over there , I do crazy stuff like this to the un suspecting friends I have all over the world."

Holy shit batman, I had to read this like 5 times, and I was absolutely flabbergasted and speechless for a while.

There shall be some formation videos when they are built that's for sure.

Thankyou again Chris. Simply blown away by this.

Nice maiden, looks to fly sweet!
Got me even more excited to get mine finished now... I'm going to try it without wingtips first :) nice light setup with 5000 4s, vector, mobius etc.
All gear will go in saddles leaving whole centre empty for packs if needed.

Oh yeah... I'd say you didnt have elevator set to high rates during servo wizard, this means it only ever saw low rates as full travel when full up was called for etc.

Hi Chris,

I sent my Paypal payment to ritewing1@yahoo.com for a Z3 with black coroplast parts (please make it black, red is not really my color).

Although I'm not gonna build it right away I couldn't wait any longer. I'm sure this will be as much fun as my first generation EPP Zephyrs. I haven't decided yet how to put GoPro and FPV camera but I'm contemplating about perhaps shortening the nose a little bit so that I can put all my batteries (probably two 4S-3300) in the front bay without causing any CG problem. One thing for sure, it will be powered by Hyperion ZS3014-12 (1132 kV) motor with an Aeronaut 9.5x6 folding prop that I've been reserving for a special occasion.

I received my Z3 a few days ago.

I have owned 3 x Zephyr II and 2 x ZXL and loved their flying characteristics, they are just so solid in the air. I should say that I have been critical (via reviews and emails to Chris) of a couple of things about them:

1. Their size (transporting was a problem)
2. The mucking around when building because they didn't have enough space for gear. Its for these reasons that I have tried several other flying wings but in the end I always come back to the ZII or ZXL.

Both of the above issues are solved in the Z3.

Having started my build, I feel privileged to own a Z3, something I have only ever experienced with one other plane, the AddictionX.

Chris, thank you for making such a well designed plane available to the community!

I received my Z3 today. However, I'm a little disappointed because it didn't come in a perfect shape.

As you can see in the pics below, coroplast verticals were severely bent beyond repair; I can't straighten them by simply bending in the opposite direction, flutes are damaged. I also have some significant dents around the servo bay in the right wing, and a little on the bottom of fuse.

7th October 2014, 03:24 PM
That sucks, but I have no doubt they'll make it "rite" for ya. There was a lot of stuff in my box that had to be taped down during travel. I'm sure if any of that got dislodged in transit it could wreak havoc on the foam, and the coroplast too it seems.

I've just noticed that the inboard corners of the wings were also damaged. When I put the elevon along the trailing edge, I can't align the inner 1.5" or so because the corner is permanently impressed. Initially I thought it was the part of design, but when take a look at posted pictures in build thread, I see that they are straight all the way.

daggad
7th October 2014, 03:41 PM
Too bad wise_man but the damage on the coroplast was not at the worst part as that is in the middle of the wing joiner. Try to straighten them out and I don't think it will show. And the dents on the wings can be fixed with some hot water.
But I do understand that it is no fun getting a new kit like that.

ritewing
7th October 2014, 03:45 PM

Personally I wouldn't even sweat that. It's such a non-critical area. Don't want the elevon crossing that gap anyway, or the wings will be permanently affixed to the center pod.

In fact, depending on how ritewing wants to handle this, I would consider buying your damaged kit because I sure as heck can work with that.

How've you been? I haven't flown much for a couple of months. It's funny I tend to stop flying in the summer. Too hot, too many bugs. Getting the itch again. I had bought a second Chimera, but I am going to hold off on that build and do the Z3 first. Love my first Chimera.

I see you are rec'ing a 4s setup. Sounds good to me. What's your specific setup if you don't mind. Motor, esc, prop battery size etc.

I think I am going to go with a folding prop. They're a bit of a pain but I like the efficiency in a glide they offer.

I have two of them flying right now, one has the 1250kv ritewing motor from my old Z2. 10x5e prop, 4s 4200 batteries from RMRC. Took that one out 3.5 miles last weekend. The other has a 1400kv motor from Chris, I have a 10x6 folder on it also running the same 4S batteries. Get a beefy ESC because amps will be pretty high to launch 65 amp min.

It is way different then the Chimera in the air, at least my Chimera. I built my chimera light-weight and super efficient so it is more floaty feeling in the air. The Z3 feels like you are flying a fighter jet. I like both, just depends on what mood I am in. Cant wait to see what you come up with. BTW I put my 3D cam on one of the Z3's in your box you printed for me. looks pretty sweet

I have this 8000mah lipo. It can put in the front bay, but it too heavy to adjust CG. For the center bay I put a 5000mah battery, and it can not balanced. The maximum battery I can put in and get CG correct are 2 5000 mah in center bay, one 5000mah in front bay. All I am talking about 4s. That will make you fly more than 3 kg. lolololo...

Chris, does the Mobius tough box have a reference line for downward tilt as show in your pics or is it just trial and error? Any suggestions on the tilt angle of the plate form; maybe a protractor or pitch gauge measurement would help narrow the round about angle? Thx.

Hey buddy, I adjust mine to about 5 to 7 degree of down. You can adjust it placing the mount for you want it and gooping it on

Finally pulled the trigger on mine. Really looking forward to the build. Its going to be pretty slow as I'm moving house over the next month. That said the new place has a big garage which is going to be a nice change from building on the kitchen table in our condo. I think its going to be much more popular with my wife ;)

Sounds fair to me. Considering I'm in NZ and it would be about the same price if not more to order the equivalent from Hobby King. (Of which I did). $24.00 international Shipping is damn good.

Well it all depends on how you look at it. Chris has said some great things about this motor but for $164,- I am not willing to check it out.
What HK combo was so expensive ?

And can't the motor be purchased alone ?

You can purchase it alone by sending an email to Chris or buy it from here http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=112_116_500&products_id=3577

70 USD for a motor...

HK Combo are way cheaper and not that bad... i have also tested Rctimer HP series motors and believe me these are some decent motors.. you will easily get it for 20 USD. but there ESCs are crap...

I just received the motor esc combo from Chris and will test it out here in a few weeks on a ZII. What has me scratching my head is the 13cm long ESC motor leads; why? Unless, people are placing this ESC way up front for other models.

I think the ESC doesn't come pre-soldered with bullet connectors. Why it makes you scratch you head :) just cut the wire to your application and solder it :)

It allows you to put the Esc in the outer bay, freeing up the rear bay if your running multiple batteries.

I just said to myself, these leads are about twice as long as most ESCs; of course I will cut them to length and solder. I am just accustom to ESC wires being a lot shorter is all. :)

Just got my Z3 on the way from readymade! I haven't bought lipos for it yet as I'm not sure what the right choice for long flight times would be. Anybody getting 30 minute flights out of this beast? I'm going to run the Ritewing motor on 4s. If I could nail down a 30 minute mixed bag flight, I would be one happy camper :)

So I have come to the conclusion that my Z3 is just not the right plane for me right now. It is definitely a very nice plane and a really great design but it is a bit too heavy, fast and relatively inefficient for me.I am looking for less of a fast sporty plane and more of a long range plane. What this means is that I am going to sell my Z3. It has had multiple crashes from bad launches (mostly due to trying to fly it on 3S) and the nose has been messed up but I have fixed with hot water and although looking a bit rough it is by no means un-flyable. The rest of the plane is in great condition but the nose is definitely beat up. I am going to sell it with the airframe (already laminated, with control rods installed), the motor that I used (NTM prop drive 3536 1400kv), and the servos (High Tech HS-485HB’s). I would like to get about $175 for it (plus shipping) but I am willing to take offers. Also bare in mind that the servos are worth $30 ($16 each, only used in this project) and the motor is worth around $15 (well used but works great). Also if somebody is interested in the plane minus the electronics I might be willing to take them out and sell it for cheaper. Any way I will post here first and see if anybody is interested and then if nobody is I will post it up on the classifieds. PM me if you are interested.

What kind of flight times are guys flying this bird getting? Curious to hear some feedback before I buy packs.

On eBay I found packs 4s 10,000 for 94 bucks shipped and 25-30C
I may give these a try and probably will give me a 45-55 minute flight time

daggad
25th December 2014, 06:20 PM
Well I will bet they are nowhere near 25-30C buddy..be careful..

XtremeWingRC
25th December 2014, 06:31 PM
Yeah even so if there 20C
20C x 10,000mah gives you 200amps of constant power. I'm not worried on a 10,000 pack as the resistance is barely there

Now if it were a 3s 2200 then I'd be worried bud

HFMan
25th December 2014, 06:53 PM
And you are taking a big gamble if you think they will come even close to that. I bet those are heavy, old school cells that sag like your great grandmother at even 50 amps. Often, these big cheap packs end up having only 1/2 the useable capacity if you are lucky. It's going to be rather tough to balance a Z3 on this kind of pack in any event. Front bay, way too nose heavy. Rear bay- Probably quite tail heavy unless you can get all your gear up front somehow.

I went with Revolectrix 4S 5500 427 blend packs. Not maidened yet, but these batteries are the best I've seen for balance, IR, and discharge behaviour. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Please report back once you get a few flights in on what your getting for flight times.

I'll probably buy two packs of 5000mah 4s in parallel to get 10,000

I'll use gens ace or sky lipo. These batts I've used for yrs and no problems. No argument there.
