Hey everyone,
I wanted to share the work I am doing on a new flying wing design.
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/techwing01.jpg?w=600
I began with XFLR5 to help select the proper airfoils and determine correct reflex etc.
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/pnael-forces-wing.jpg?w=600
After I was happy with the results I made a prototype.
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/20131123_142621.jpg?w=600
after many test flight and input from another test pilot. I set about to improve the low speed handling, reduce tip stalls and also improve the load handling capabilities. I increased the over all size to a 42inch WS, up from 36 inches. I increased to tip cord and added real working wing tips and a fixed LE slot to the outboard wing area.
before:
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/tip-vortex.jpg?w=600
After:
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/techwing13deg.jpg?w=600
The new tips greatly reduce the wingtip vortex. This mean better efficiency, better stall characteristics and grater load carrying capability.
In order further reduce tip stall and greatly increase the CL max of the overall form. I added fixed slots to the LE of the outboard wing panel.
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mh-49slot_1deg.jpg?w=600
This helps the airfoil achieve a Cl max of ~1.2, much higher then the ~0.75 Cl max of the unmodified airfoil.
You can see the large amount of negative pressure generated by the slot at high angles of attack. This is at about a 13 deg AoA.
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/techwing13degsurface.jpg?w=600
the blue area represents the lowest pressures.

I had a dead stick about 1 minute into the flight due to a bad ESC. landing was no sweat. It handled very nicely I could tell from the small amount of time I was able to fly. Thanks for the video and help launching, Trevor.

Thanks! went flying yesterday. Had a blast. The LE slots really pay off. The stalls are always straight ahead. No tip stall. Kill the power and pull full back elevator and it just drops the nose. You can see a few times in this video of it just loosing altitude and porpoising. The ailerons remain effective, you can even steer it around while it is doing it.

I fly the second prototype Techwing that was manufactured and designed by Wayne Garris. have had it for a few months now and love the stability and flight times this airframe provides. A recent re-power and new laminate has really let me put the hammer down with just a 2200mah 4cell. The handling at slow speeds is great and I haven't noticed any tip stall characteristics typical of my previous wings. Running dtf uhf, 1.3ghz video, rembizi osd, pz0420, hitec servos and a 250watt motor. Best part is it fits in my trunk fully assembled and ready to fly. Techwing is a great fpv platform. I built mine like a tank to take some serious hits but it still flys like a dream.

C-5, no problem I'll get one printing for you. Its $100 for the kit. I have them available on my store (http://odoo.hobbyuav.bitnamiapp.com/shop/product/techwing-alpha-kit-69). Sorry it took me a while to see your comment. I was getting notices through tapatalk on my phone but they stopped for some reason.
here are a couple pictures of the cad work I am doing to get it ready to be molded. this is the fuselage. Thinking about a large wood tray at the bottom to mount things to and tie in the wing spars.

thick trailing edge:
https://hobbyuav.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/thick-te.jpg?w=300
The hardest part about molded EPO id the fact you cant have sharp edges. Everything must be over 1/8th inch, so no sharp TE. I had to do a complete re-model to
fatten up the TE.

I have yours fully fabricated, I just finished a batch of the winglets which I was having problems with. The tip gets melted away all to easily. I just need to find a box for it and ship it. Here is what you will be getting.

Ah okay, no problem. in that case just add $5 for the shipping and I can fit it all into one big box.

Dale,
give me a phone call after you get the kit and before you start assembly, so I can give you some quick instructions.

Thanks a lot guys. I think you are going to really enjoy the techwing.

AUW should be about 27oz.

That there is powerful purdy!!! Nice Dale! That is a 2s battery correct? I thought I remember you saying you were going to make it a 2S system.

Yep, 2s. Thrust test is good, just not hitting cg yet. Might have to get a bigger battery or throw a mobius on there.

c5galaxy engineer
16th January 2015, 12:18 PM
What video system are you using?

gobigdale
16th January 2015, 01:46 PM
Being a 2S system, I am going with the Core Pro which will provide power to my 12v camera and vTx. I have to wait a while to buy it ($178). I just started getting regular paychecks again and the wife says we have more important things to buy first... go figure. I may go cheap to begin with and just power the thing off a separate 3S battery. It is just going to be a park flyer, no distance runs for it. I just want a simple grab and go, fly anywhere plane.

Nice flying Dale. How do you like the low speed performance? Defiantly a good weekend for blue and green!

Thanks! I love the slow speed performance. It just seems to float in the air. I think I still need to dial back my elevon movement a tad and get the CG a little bit further forward (at about 5.5 inches from front of wing roots right now). Went out for another flight today around 4pm (sun was setting fast). Here is a little bit of the end of the flight. Anytime you can catch your airplane out of the air you know you have something special.
