Yeah, DL dipole on it, tested out to around 800m, not a single lockout to date. Its also spring mounted so I can roll it :D. Weak link at the moment is my 5.8ghz link. Line of sight is fine, had great picture at 800m with just some spironets, but It suffers in valleys and behind stuff.

Haha, I saw that ridge and just had to leap off it!

I put on some bigger wheels and made some 10ah 2s LiPos for it. Runs for a good 1 1/4-1/2 hours.

DJMedic is a cool dude. Would be neat to see that truck set to FPV. Lots of potential.

@ spitfire_doug - I too would like to get something more for the track be it street or short course, but the short course stuff is so hardcore from a non scale perspective, it's hard to really get a steady feel for it with mound after mound that you can't see over or past.

If FPV short course racing picked up seems we'd need more subdued courses and not so unrealistic where to scale the truck is flying through the air over and over for many hundreds of feet. What currently happens on RC tracks is super exaggerated from real short course racing, and for me I'd like a more all around realistic FPV scale course. I like seeing trucks thrown through the air over and over, but not from the camera perspective since it can make most want to barf.

From the ground FPVing I've done most stock motors do the trick when others want the fastest motor and speed (which is fine, to each his own). To me driving between 10-15mps is more like 60-80 mph it seems in FPV depending on the truck, but I'm no math wiz and can't for the life of me find a good mph scale converter that gives a good readout of the conversion.

For instance, thy call the Summit a 1/8th scale truck, but we use 1/6th scale figures for the Tonka Summit and the Tonka is made for the figures, so for scale-ish purposes I consider the Tonka Summit a 1/6th scale truck experience, and therefore would work it's numbers as a 1/6th truck. Well, no one makes 1/6th in RC that I've found much of and no calculators to input that I can find.

Anyway. It seems the math would be 1 mile = 5280' therefore 1 mile in 1/6 scale would be 880' (and mean the 1 mile range trip I made was to scale 6 miles), but that still doesn't give me the speed without more math.

I need to clock it at full speed, or just hit full throttle and run for 880' to calc how long it takes from the start line to the finish line since I din't have a radar gun or speedometer, but I bet the mph is faster than you'd run a truck like that in full scale, or more like a race truck if so, definitely no like that on dirt back roads.

Anyway, that't my tangential post on MPH in FPV on the ground. Once the rains stop maybe I can test such a speed test.

If you have a gps you can strap it to your car. Most handheld or car gps have a max speed function that works for moving in a straight line. You could probably find the same thing on an app for a smartphone as well.

That's true, I could use the EzOSD I have to get a feel... just every time I stop I get the end screen! Sander, I need that custom software you were working on. Or just use iut for that test and disable the end summary I suppose.

Would it be a bad idea to add FPV equipment to this 1/4-1/5 Crawler because its 'all' aluminum?
....interference?, or no worries?

Man, that would be awesome if you had the money!
Alloy won't cause any problems. In fact if it is between any other electrics it will help shield interference.

2nd January 2013, 06:23 PM
The antennas should be above the frame. I can't see it causing any more problems than what has already been built. Dang, someone beat me to the larger crawler. Can't afford it now but I figure that it would be close to the ultimate platform. Large enough for any equipment, and tired big enough to crawl up steps with ease.

carguy,
how far is your distance with the DL UHF ground use?.... is UHF ideally get more range then 72mhz on the Ground?

Thanks,

carguy1994ca
4th January 2013, 07:50 AM
So far I went to over 1000 feet without problem. My video range (300 mW 1.3) ends there for now but I have a 800 mW in the mail so will test that soon. If you have a 72 mhz I would try that first. People are getting some good range with them (up to a mile). Check for Woby and Replayreb videos on vimeo and youtube, they were using 72mhz.

Thanks for the nice comment on the vid :)

Damn I need a summit asap! Too cool! But so expensive here in Europe (850 dollars)...

I landed my hexa once at 500 meters (~2000ft) and I had still control, so you car guys should be safe with UHF!

carguy1994ca
4th January 2013, 11:48 AM
Expensive yes, but the summit is IMO the best truck for FPV because it is big and heavy, this helps when goign across obstacles as well as low gear and locking diffs. High speed is good too, so long distance on flat terrain is easy and not too boring.

UHF is good but running on the ground with lots of obstacles can lead to some failsafes. So far i had a couple going behind big concrete blocks 800 feet away, but driving around a big shop with metal clading was all good. I use UHF because I have it, if not I would use a 72 mhz radio.

Bluestreak
4th January 2013, 05:12 PM
So far I have been 1.818kms with my UHF Dragonlink. This is behind hills and in a forest of trees. Only reason I couldn't get further was because I was to far behing a hill. Should put that video up...
It is also boosted though - so I'm cheating a bit :)

carguy1994ca
4th January 2013, 05:45 PM
great to hear that because I was readin some old posts from you and you were saying 1 km was your max with the DL. That's fine with me as this is my goal. If I get this far, I will just be weary that someone steals my truck

I have a 800 mW VTx from RMRC coming. What do you have for video that can go to 1.8 km ?

Bluestreak
4th January 2013, 08:15 PM
Yeh, used to be about 1km (although this is also behind obstacles). Boosting and raising the antenna helped a lot. Actually the range was probably longer than 1km originally but there is no boost switch to hit if you get into trouble so it's not as easy to push further.
I used a 1.2 ghz TX for the 1.8km drive - it has a fair few mw's. Lowest frequency that doesn't get interference is the best. I would like to use 910mhz but there's to much crap on that channel here.

1893018931Just wanted to ask about "NEWER" SUMMIT owners.
(Mine is almost 3 years old, so I ask about newer SUMMITS out there).

I want to 'Widen' the Track of our Truck with these,

http://www.integy.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=7453&p_catid=144#.UOeNK2_Ad-N

but
I don't know if these will fit? Are the newer SUMMITS have 'Grub Allen Type screws' to hold the 17mm HEX onto the axles?
(GREEN image)
Like these:

or those little 'PIN's that slide into the hole of the axle and the 17mm HEX fit onto them?
(SILVER image).

Can you guys take a picture of Front and Rear?
Here is what I mean.

If you widen it, maybe it won't go in some tight places ?

If you want an all in one GS, goggles on 5.8 with small CP antena like spyro net would be the most compact. Or you could mount your 1.3 receiver to a hat...

azjeg

If you consider the industrial temperature range, ingress protection, Ex and military standard requirements of most of our customers, you would probably be disappointed to find out how much even a single MIL 5015 connector costs. Unfortunately those things add up quite fast. However, if you are happy with a simple IP67 level waterproof construction that would still perform the same tasks at the same level, the price would be closer to $2000... ;-)

Such proximity of RF gear in an all-in-one GS is not at all a problem if you use a good low pass filter. Just google "Chebyshev filter". We use the 7th order versions of it, so the attenuation is around 50dB at 1.2-1.3GHz. I have them specifically built here by a ham, they cost about $40 each, but you can easily make them yourself.

azjeg

Yep, that would also do it, but it would only knock off about 30dB, so if you want to go closer with the antennas, you may still need a low pass Chebyshev.

Google is your friend :-) we use Farnell or Mouser in Europe but this source is closer to your neck of the woods:
www.newark.com , look for "Circular Military Connectors" or even "mil-c-5015"
There are a number of other mil standard stuff we have to use, 5015 being on the more economical side.
The cheapest connectors we can put between the payload boxes is about a hundred bucks, but you can double that for the average figure. Most of our robots require at least 6 or 8 of them, so you have to budget for that. :-)

I can understand in building a quality rig then costs mount up. Mine is built on the cheap but when you add up every little thing it is surprising how much it ends up being.
I was watching "bomb Patrol Afghanistan" and their IRobots are over $100K for the base model!!! What surprised me more was that when they wanted to get to an IED on the top of a hill (total line of sight) they said that it was about 1.5kms which was out of range of their robots. Surely they would have the capability to go further than that?

I've since added a 401b gyro and "perfected" its handling. Depending on the gyro gain I can make it track straight as an arrow (but feels artificial), or I can loosen it up so it can still drift (the most fun). Was "showing off" to some folks and it was kicking serious ass, and then crashed it badly and needs some rebuilding before a proper video can be shot of its new capabilities. All in all the pivoting motor (versus rudder) works nicely. But I think V2 will be greatly improved, and I'll add fpv gear and have some fun terrorizing my neighbors, lol!

Since I started with the FPV Summit (not long ago) more friends empty my fridge while driving my car round the neighborhood at night.
A the field I don't get much driving time because there's always a friend asking for just 5 minutes
after 5 minutes there's a line behind, me not included naturally.
When I do get a chance for some fun driving, I return home with hours of videos to edit )-:

Haven't had the time to build a mount for the quad so I threw the cam and vTX on my 10th scale buggy. Wedged the TX between the wing mounts and one very loose screw and a twist tie hold the cam on to the rear strut tower.

<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZlGx-GaRnR8" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

I think I might have to make this rig more rugged for future use, also better RX antenna at least.

SONY CX210, you need LANC controller to zoom
I wrote driver for myself cause the controlers I found online cost as much as the camcorder
here is daytime footage of CX210 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXiwu966VL8)

I am really impressed with that camcorder, especially with its ability to handle the "hot spot" created by your LED spotlight against the darkness. I just wish consumer electronics would adopt the hugely successful and very robust CAN protocol. It's become quite common and there are many different devices and drivers for it. And of course, as it was developed for automotive use, it is very simple and able to carry data over long distances. I suppose I could create a LANC to CAN converter...

I killed myself to try and find a decent 360 degree servo so that I could look behind when needed. I really didn't like the lazyness of the sail-winch servo that everyone seems to love.. it's especially frustrating when paired with the amazing Trinity head tracker. So I opted instead for the rear-facing camera on a switcher... works great. And I'm delighted with the PTR module that fatshark sells... paired with trinity...it's a REALLY natural, comfortable experience. I *never* have to center my head tracker once I get going. power up the system... drop the goggles, center the tracker and the rest is all mindless fun!

Cardboard Boks, the rhythmic horizontal interference lines that flash down your screen are symbolic of local, man-made noise. What frequency are you running? I suspect there is a comms tower nearby blasting away with hundreds of watts on some lower harmonic than your vid frequency. If you went to a different frequency or maybe just went to one extreme or the other on the channels available to you, it could help eliminate/lessen that. Just a suggestion, something to try.

2.4Ghz video. My laptop, tablet, phone and wifi router where all in arms reach from the VRx when it was just sitting on my desk so somewhat expected. When I'm out at the field there is no issues at all.

DL installed on Wraith. Taranis programmed for surface operations - this was kinda fun.

Silly interior and driver removed. Now what to make a base for FPV gear. Thinking Elmers Foam Board - easily cut to shape, pretty tough, very affordable and replaceable. Cam is likely gonna be möbius for both HD recording and video out (I'm gonna violate this rule since I'm on the ground).

Zip ties are gonna be key to component placement on tube frame.

Next to do is install stand alone BEC, as load on ESC from pan (tilt) servos will prob be too much for stock BEC.

Photos to come.

First FPV outing on a trail with my new Axial Wraith Spawn RTR. Other gear used: IRC 600mW 5.8 vtx (SMA connector broke off already twice, first on my miniquad, second time on Caipirinha, so all the range is not there anymore), TBS 59 camera with GoPro replacement lens, recorded with Dominator V2. I think I'll tilt the camera down just a little bit, but the view is decent as it is.

To you guys that are FPVing Cars or Trucks.

Do the Brushed motors interfere with FPV video more than Brushless motors.
If so, are certain frequencies effected more than others ?
I/e 1.3, 2.4 or 5.8ghz video.

Is 433 or 2.4mhz control effected?
