Thread: FY31ap questions

    FY31ap questions

My 31 hunts when in RTL and when in ACM, it makes it home but seems like could do a better job. also why a throttle channel if it cant be used for such. also my understanding is the 31 can be used for waypoints even without the data radio just need to download the GCS soft ware but what cable is needed

I have just found the same problem. I was really impressed, up to 500m. but RTL from 750m out showed that the 'hunting' process was beginning to be more obvious.Testing from 1000m, RTL turned the wing as expected but then over-corrected to the point where I was sure it was about to do a complete circle immediately after turning for home. I 'bottled' it at that the 240 degree point.
The only reason I can think of is delayed GPS data fed to the FY31 after making a turn/correction. I'm wondering if less aileron/rudder gain will cure this. By this I mean, if the turn for home is less aggressive will it give the FY more time to receive and act upon, accurate GPS data. If I get chance to try this I'll come back. (er..no pun intended).
I too don't use the FY for throttle. I got a USB lead with the unit for GCS setup but until I'm confident in the RTL function I will leave waypoints alone.

RTL will do nothing with waypoints, it's not even on the same switch, and yes you can program the waypoints with the GCS software, also the new GCS software lets you change waypoint mode to either waypoint, altitude hold, or heading hold.

With my setup I usually only get about 10 to 20 degrees off from home point before it will correct itself again, though I did a RTL at 4.7km and it seemed to want to fly in the wrong direction so I just flew it back.

I ALWAYS fly with ACM on except for take off.

    ACM on allways?????????????

I think the system just dont process fast enough to keep up with wind drift/crosswind component. I have owned a couple old autopilots in scale planes that did the same thing when flying a VOR signal or on approach to land the old auto pilots like Stec would hunt the final bearing setting if you where out 10 degress from one side to the other. I have watched my FY31 turn one way on the RTL then turn the other like it cant makeup its mind when its 180 out from the home point.

When and if I lose video I'd prefer RTL to be completely reliable, even at 4km+.
Check your manual and your comment about switches. I think you mean ASM (Auto stabalise mode). The normal setup is RTL and ACM on SW2, but thanks anyway.

Yes it was a typo :P.

I have RTLd from 4km no problem, it does fish around but I noticed an average drift of 10 degrees either side of home point, sometimes 20 degrees, usually when the wind is more.

I also have a quick question about the RTL.
What happens if I let's say fly at 10000feet alti and 10km's away and I hit RTL, will the plane return at the same altitude or will it descend to my position so that it starts auto circling within LOS?

Sam: From what I read in the manual and my limited tests, the FY will maintain altitude and RTL at that altitude.

My previous post #2, indicated I had a problem with RTL at 500m+. With the advice/help of Coyote, I reduced the throws on the servo arms and further tests show that the tendency to over-correct after switching to RTL has been reduced. When I get chance I'll try this at 750m+.

Since tested at 900m. FY works well.

My assumption from experience is that if you turn RTL on at an altitude of 10,000 while 10km away, it will probably have dropped in altitude to about 5,000 feet by the time it got home, and would figure 8 itself down to whatever altitude you have RTH set to (default is 200 meters).
