Cool thread, going to have to check it out when my brain is not scrambled eggs at work.

The importand thing to remember do not try to copy each and every character. When you are learning the code even if you only reconize one character in twelve at least you are reconizing something. Listen to the same recording (which ever it is) and keep practicing. Eventually you will reconize more and more and the more you listen the more you will reconize. Like I said before I used a cassette tape everyday on the way to work. It was a nice distraction from the daily trip and it forced me to listen and not write of fret about missing characters. Even to this day when I am copying higher speed transmissions I rarely copy every character. At higher speeds you will start reconizing words or groups of words that are pretty much sent repeatedly by operators and then I will foucus on specific words of information I need to record for either the logbook or contest exchange.
Another important thing is don't get frustrated and give up. Some people pick it up pretty fast. Others take more practice but will eventually get it if they practice hearing the code and can get away from the visual....

Good one dzone. I totally missed the post.
One thing I would caution you about. Anybody wanting to pass a 5wpm or any test for that matter, learn and practice at a slightly higher speed. When it comes time for the test you will be much more relaxed and do better on the test. For a 5wpm test study at 8wpm. For a 13wpm test study at 15 to 18 wpm. For a 20wpm test study at 25 or better. You will thank me for that tip some day.....

Thanks for all the tips, justabigham! I never thought about going beyond my tech license because there is no Morse code for it. But I may learn/ practice this just for fun!

I can remember back in the late 50's and early 60's when I was very little my grandfather used to listen to the ships communicate at night with morse code. He listened on an old Zenith multiband shortwave radio. It was very cool. Sadly the ships don't do it anymore but the amateur radio bands are alive and well and morse code is very popular there. Get your hands on a radio that you can use to listen to them with or find a ham that will let you come over and listen to his.

I used to have an old Heathkit tube rx as a kid back in the late 60's. No tx so it always frustrated me that I couldn't talk back... Heard plenty of Morse code on it, but didn't take the time to learn enough to decode it. Maybe now.....
