    Mission impossible

Had a crash that mangled a balance lead. Unbelievably, it didn't short and I think it's salvageable if I trim it. Now which wire would you cut first?!

    Mission impossible

I did it in the end and there was only a few sparks! The picture doesn't do justice of what a tangled mess of wires it was. One of them was stripped and wrapped tightly round the +ve lead which was also cut and exposed! How it didn't properly short in the crash I don't know.

Right, new balance cables arrived and I just want to check that I'm not in for any nasty surprises... My plan is to use a multimeter against the main ground to identify the cells as all of them have a black lead apart from the 4th cell. So, I'm thinking that with a multimeter, ground against ground will be 0v, cell 1 is 3.8v, cell 2 7.6v and cell 3 11.4v. Is that correct?

Correct, that's how to check without opening the battery.

    Mission impossible

Ta! Any other advice for battery soldering? Apart from the obvious risk of shorting, are there any other precautions to take?

You have to take great care not to run out of beer while working, other than that there's no need to overthink, everything else is simple. Make sure you isolate *all* the wires separately while working on one of them, and that's it. I solder and modify my batteries all the time- shortening wires, changing connectors, changing balance plugs to servo pin connectors, solder from separate cells etc. Just don't run out of beer and you're OK

Well it's all fixed and up and running again now! I ended up cutting/trimming all the wires in the end. Just not at the same time!
