AA vs. Lipo - Who's with me?

A wild thought i had when brainstorming with Greenace92 (guy builts awesome affordable slopesoarers, keep an eye on his progress)

    I weighted four 3000Nimh penlite (AA) battery's: 120gr exact, using a Holder.

    A 3000mah nanotech lipo weights 164gr.

So when flying long range (or any other non-fast manouverable flying experience), what would be the downside of powering your RC-Receiver and servo's with a seperate AA-pack instead of those deadly expensive heavy hazardous Lipo's? Good chance that when your engine runs dead, you still have control no?

Also, a lipo is empty from one moment to another, but don't your servo's slow down over time when using AA, thus warning for problems to come?

Crashing a lipo always sucks, especially if you have to wait for a new one. But AA's are available at any gasstation. It could be the difference of going home or one more flight

That's the way gassers do it, they either use Nimh or LiFe packs.

Because they need a way to power their servos. no reason it wouldn't work. Personaly I like regulators more than Rx packs, but if I can get hold of some, I think I'd use Life,
The advantage being better power density in the Life's without having to run a regulator.

Best of both worlds IMO. (not to mention you can charge them fast as hell and run them down really low with no ill effects)

I use a 2s LiFe pack on my composite slope glider, and it runs the rx plus five digital servos without a problem, without BEC. One charge can keep me flying for hours.
