Scott, do you have a picture of that setup? I am having a hard time imagining it.

I'll do up an antenna this weekend and photograph it, I've done this on the TX side with military commo wire as a test, especially up in Alaska when the Northern Lights play hell on commo - it gave us some additional DB..

SO this pic, the gray wire is the speaker wire - the real KEY is to keep the pair together as close as possible (and as short as possible), the split makes the V and points to the vehicle - see attached - I'm at work on an antiquated computer so this is all I have...The PVC pipe is just to extend it up in the air. Look at any dipole Stereo antenna - it's the same thing, if you bend the dipole towards your target it makes it more directional.
This is all just from memory and experience and has never been done to any of my RC stuff but now I am curious too...

I see, thanks for the drawing; pretty simple. I think for it to work properly, the two elements that diverge at the end need to be 1/4 wavelength, also coaxial would work better than speaker wire.

    Quarter Wavelength in Inches: 39

That I used 6' for the height - make it 8, make it 12, 24 - whatever - that is irrelevant to the wavelength, was just a number I threw out.

As for wire , I can't give you the theory but as long as those pieces of wire are side by side, they will not (should not) pick up any signals except at the dipole.

However if you wanted to use Coax and two pieces of wire soldered I would imagine it would work.

I've used these with success on PRC-77's in the past to try to get the full 15 miles.

DISCLAIMER: Test this using an FM stereo before applying to any flying r/c aircraft!!!! the 72mhz is close enough for gov work to just attach to a stereo receiver
