There are a few of us here that know the real FPV is less than 25 feet off the deck with lots of objects to dodge Maybe I should start a dare devil stunts thread?

Good thread idea. However, I might have to fill up at least 2 pages worth of stuff. Time for a "Best of pt. III" edition.

I am ready to tear it up for sure. Just gotta get my spare time/motivation/good weather synchronized! And we definitely need to do some flying sometime, alex.
Get me a Crocodile sandwich. And make it snappy.

Was doing more vibration testing on my helicopter this morning when I made a rapid descent.

The "vortex ring effect" caused a bit of shaking, as expected. What wasn't expected was a sudden series of oscillations that caused the SK720 to go a little nuts and flipping the helicopter completely inverted.

And I couldn't get it right-side up again! The SK-720's self-leveling was doing it's job and wouldn't let me get it rotated the other way around.

It was about a hundred feet up and heading down fast. And somehow I realized I needed to pull the collective DOWN!

So I did. Just in time.

Going full down on the collective gave me about 3 degrees negative pitch with zero power.

The heli thumped upside-down, then flipped back onto its skids at a full stop. I took a look at it, and there was just a slight nick at the base of one of the rotor blades. I turned the main rotor head, and the shaft wasn't the slightest bit bent!

So I carefully powered it up, watched, and it was OK. So I flew it a second time.

I had turned "Lock Cyclic Gains" off on one of the banks to tune the cyclic gains. So on the next flight I set it about 1/3 lower thinking that would be enough to prevent the oscillations.

I took it up again, and tapped the cyclic forward as part of the test routine. There was the oscillations again!! And this time the helicopter went down sideways. Well, that was it for the day. Two crashes was more than it could take.

Was that an inverted auto rotation landing? That's gotta be a scary moment! Must be muscle memory to flip the throttle-hold! Sucks that your heli is downed. I'm surprised it didn't bend anything on that first crash.

Actually not quite an autorotation. There was power until I brought the stick all the way down, at which point there's no power at all. I didn't even have time to hit throttle hold. In fact, in the second crash I didn't hit TH until after it was down. Stripped the main gear, tore up the blades, bent the tail boom. Two servos had damaged gears but I had programmed in "overload" protection using a servo programmer, and that prevented them from burning themselves out after they got jammed.

it looked like an auto landing came down relatively soft considering!

ugh...that's a terrible crash. heli crashes like that have the most insane sound...almost like an explosion. sorry to hear about that. i hope your expensive electronics are intact...i know that when i crash my 600 i almost cry bc i know i am going to be digging deep in my pockets to get her back up. i started stockpiling parts, but haven't flown it since early summer...

well, i hope you get her back together soon.
