I have owned just about every sim made. Awhile ago, some of the top pilots gave their honest opinions of the available sims. It came down to all of them have their strengths and most top pilots that use them own real flight and phoenix and use both for different flying. One does better than the other at certain things.

But unless you are in the top 10%, you will never know the difference.

i like realflight enough, but i haven't tried them all. all of them are an upgrade from fms :-)
what matters most to me is having proper flight physics and while none do, realflight is ok i guess. don't have phoenix for example.

To me, Phoenix feels closer than RF. but RF has better autorotation with helis

Since I'm in the bottom 10% I flipped a coin and picked phoenix. I'm a bit worried that my kid will be better than me soon...

Does anyone know Aerofly 5? I'm considering buying it because it's the only sim that runs natively on a Mac.

Probably old news (haven't played it in a while so there you go), but Phoenix4 has multiplayer FPV in a 3D landscape. The controls still need some tweaking to make it feel more real (all planes are too easy to fly with stock configuration to my opinion)

Woohoo, didn't know that. I'll have to go look for my Phoenix adapter again and join in. Worldwide FPV fly-in...

    Plane/wings only:

depending on the settings i find RF or Phoenix more realistic (physics-wise). But in the majority of the cases, RF seems more realistic (thats Phoenix4 and RF G5).

In particular I dislike the way wind works in Phoenix. I point the flying wing in the wing and it gets pushed back just like a huge trainer. In reality the flying wing goes through the wind a lot more easily (and given that I *only* fly with very heavy wind where I am.. I think I know how it should feel at least a little bit :P)

Also, RF has a lot more models.

Now.. RF lags often for no reason, which is annoying. And it takes a long time to load maps and models (yes, i've a good PC, ssd & all). Phoenix loads everything nearly instant and never lags.

    Pick your poison I guess

(i also tried the aerofly demo and found it crappy, but i don't have the full version)

For helis, I'm not good enough to tell the difference.. except one thing, in Phoenix if you backflip on a FP heli and you have a lot of inertia, then cut off the power, it falls more or less like a brick instead of going on as it should. no biggy tho.

I went with Phoenix due to the Quad Copter in v3, now that v4 lets you sorta do FPV its worth it in my book, you get a wing and a quad, what more do you need =) I do agree about the physics though, the other systems do seem to be more realistic, but not by much.

well a friend let me try reflex XTR now (5.05) and I must say I found the physics to be a step ahead of phoenix and RF, both with fixed wings and helis.

phoenix really has the advantage that the program works well, loads fast etc. XTR and RF are both weird (strange UI, loads slowly, random odd bugs..)

    Haven't tried aerofly.
