Can you guys show some close ups of your motor mount? My motor plates where not perfectly square and the motor metal bracket is not a perfect 90 degrees. Is that right? Did you guys build any thrust angles in yours?

Here are a couple quick pics of mine... I did things a little different, after flying in Hartsel and seeing how magnetic the soil was. I thought that I would get the motor a little higher to protect it from dust and debris. this also helps a little because I don't have a folding propeller. I may end up putting it like recommended in the instructions, but for now it flies just fine like this. I think I bent mine to 90 degrees and bolted it down.

I got a chance to get out and fly tonight, it was the first flight of the DR with the Dragon LinkV2 Installed... it was all line of sight, but I was just trying to prove things out. Flight times was 18.3 minutes... I'll edit post to add the mah used when I charge the batteries backup.

Thanks for those..... I guess from an efficiency stand point we loose a little with the motor sitting higher up?

perhaps... I figure that the air is already pretty turbulent there from the camera and GoPro. I don't think that it makes a huge difference. On a side note, I am slowly moving my CG aft... I removed the lead weights that I had on the nose after that flight. I am hoping to get out and fly again this weekend. I think that where I had my CG was a little nose heavy (9.625 inches). Will keep you posted on my results.

Nice flight! I counted 78... JK. I am going to start with the CG at 10 inches and 1/4 reflex for my first test glides. I noticed on your first throw when it hit the ground it was gliding level, so it is flying really nice as far as I can tell. I have got to get mine done this weekend so I can start flying it. Have you tried an overhead/overhand launch?

Each time I am flying a plane after a "change" I have a helper launch (also do the same on a maiden), that way I can keep both hands on the sticks... and when launching by myself I put a finger on either side of the motor with my thumb on the bottom of the wing for support and give it a good toss (at about a 20 degree angle from the horizon, overhand like a baseball. on my smaller wings I do a weird side arm toss from the leading edge (kind of like throwing a Frisbee... you just don't put any spin on it) with power on. I can't seem to comfortably do that with the Deep reaper though.

When I launched a heavy 48" wing I held it about 6" from the nose on the LE and then powered up, and did a cross between an overhead backwards throw and a frisbee toss. Worked out nice, you sort of throw it backwards and as the plane moves you turn your body so your always looking at the plane. I always launch by myself.

My DRXL build is stalled right now until I come up with a solution for the motor mount. The manual says to use the hardware from your motor, but I know of no motors that provide hardware long enough to go through the wing and two plates. I picked up some bolts, washers and nuts from a HS, but when I try to tighten them so the mount stays in place it compresses the foam and I can't get them tight enough for it to hold. What did you guys do? How many bolts did you use?

I had this same problem... I used locknuts, so that they wouldn't loosen and then just snugged them down. the first flights the motor mount had the freedom to wiggle around, last week I put some CA under the mount and tightened down again, it is now pretty solid.

I used two bolts from the hardware store, with nyloc nuts. I just tightened them until they start to compress the plates/ foam, not more. It's fine like that, those plates won't be going anywhere!
