Hi From Australia, ain't no pilot though :)

I'm a model boater who is fairly active on RCGroups I'm slowly setting up a boat for FPV, got the bare minimum ATM in Camera, Video tx,rx and a laptop with AM CAP device. Going to be more of a lurker than active. The boat I've set up is too big, but its stable and slow. Eventually I want some telemetry to record depth and position.

    Cheers
    Nick

    Brought a Plane

I brought a plane , just an AXN Clouds Fly, put it together and had successful maiden by a member of a local flying club, this proved to be a little difficult as all fly mode 1 bar a small number and I use mode 2 as this is the radio I have. Been madly flying a simulator called CearView, was mucking around with FMS but Clearview is much better for me, using a plane called a Sky Surfer which appears to be similar to the AXN. The only thing is I havent found (maybe not supported) is a chase or on plane view. I will learn to fly first

As per my boat threads I don't trust my gear on a plane so LOS flying till I scrape up the cash for a recommended setup.

    Cheers
    Nick

Hey Nick! Welcome to the world of FPV!

There is a growing number of us FPVers in Brisbane, I'm located on the north side near the airport so if you need any help just let us know! As you're into boats the place we fly at up north (turf farm) happens to have a large dam on it also! From what I've read using FPV gear on boats will probably require a different set of antennas - the antenna gurus on here can probably help out in that regard.

What FPV gear have you bought to start of with? And also what are you using for RC? You may have already read this but I can say from experience that Spektrum should never be used for FPV!*
(*except perhaps when used with ultra micros)

Check out the ground pounders threads, I'm the only one with a boat so far Alex has already given me some advice but to re hash I have a Best Offer Buy 700 mW 1.2GHz with antennas recommended by Alex, The RC initially was a Corona 2.4 hack but I'm going back to 36 MHz for the FPV due to interference. I just sold the boat so I'm looking at my other models to work out the best platform. Once that is sorted I wouldn't mind coming up to try out that dam, our lake is 350 metres across, even though the boat is 1.5metres long it was almost invisible when I went to rescue it the last time I sailed it.

The AXN will be FPV but I have to learn to fly first.

    Cheers

    Thanks Kev,

GOt my AXN Maidened by a local flyer from the Hinterland model Aero Club, flies very nicely, I appear to have the mode no one uses as my pilot work colleague would not fly it. So Ive been flying a Sky Surfer on the Clearview simulator an hour or 2 a day over the weekend and manage to crash only once in 5 or so flights now, I plan to fly this Friday weather permitting.

Hi Nick, I'm a mode 2 flyer in Australia too. You're right, we're pretty few and far between down here. The only reason I fly mode two is that I'm self taught, and by the time I learned to fly it was too late to change. Honestly if I were to start over, my primary driver for a choice of mode would be to use whatever everyone else uses. It doesn't matter one bit which mode you fly, once it becomes muscle memory it makes no difference.

Are you sure it's too late for you to change? Every time I fly with friends I wish we could swap and fly each other's models. It's a shame.

I can try but a quick muck around on a mode 1 Tx didn't feel right to me,I found I was always affecting the throttle .

It would be easier if I stick with the club though.
