Thread: 5.8 for video?

  1. #1

    Question 5.8 for video?

    Howdy Everyone,

Having extensive experience with unmanned aircraft, I have seen the impressive results, robust construction, and simple nature of 5.8 ghz video and a high-gain dish antenna.

I am looking at the possible purchase of a 12’ crank-upspeaker tripod to substantially elevate the antenna, a Servo City heavy-duty panand tilt system for tracking, and an L-com 5.8 ghz 30dBi dish. Combined with a 200mw TX, is there any reasonI should expect less than optimal result with such a system?

While I have a good grasp of the reasons various frequencies(900, 1.2, etc) are used, the different types of antennas, etc, I feel like I am going out on a limb with this sort of a setup. Before I end up dumping $2000 into a GCS, I’dlike to get some feedback so I don’t end up wasting my money. All comments are welcome.

Not sure of that antenna. Haven't seen a dish used at this point for 5.8 myself, but the antenna dudes may have. I've been using antenna made by Alex and Hugo (the antenna dudes - not an official name ;-) and their stuff works well. Not sure of your final application, but worth getting as much advice while keeping your objectives clear since you could get tons of advice leading to advice overload and eventually advice contradiction.

I wouldn't make it that difficult, an ImmersionRC 600mW 5.8GHz transmitter with a ImmersionRC Uno5800 receiver and a 10x10 inch 18dBi L-com flat patch antenna gets you all the range you'll need, have a look here:

I appreciate the fact that my proposed setup seems a bit over-the-top, however I was under the impression that, while accurate trackingwill be crucial, the extremely narrow beamwidth afforded by a dish antenna willhelp to eliminate multipathing was well as lower the noise floor. I am by no means an expert so if this is not correct then please let me know.
