Question Good Car Mount Antenna's for Scherrer UHF?

    Hey Guys,

Recently Got my hands on the Scherrer UHF. It doesn't come with an antenna so I purchased the little quarter wave antenna rubber ducky style. The one that is recommended for the immersion UHF system.

I wanted to test the range so I left my plane at home with the wife in the backyard. I drove over a mile away. It could only reach this range using the high 2W setting.
and at that distance the lights were flashing on the RX meaning its losing signal stregth.

1W would not reach the plane.

Now I am sure you would expect a much lower range when testing this way rather than flying the plane in the sky as the signal must have traveled through many disturbances obstacles and even cell phone towers from a point transmitted on land and received on land as well.

Never the less I would like to also get a car mount antenna with about 3dbi gain.
Is there anything you could recommend specificall?

Also If I'm getting the range of 1 mile from one point on ground to another. How much more range could I expect when flying like 300 feet in the air or higher?

    Thanks again!!

    Adam

A car mounted antenna will do well - if it is mounted on the car. I'm not sure if that was your intent or to use it hand held. If you are looking for something to attach directly to the TS-LRS then a gain type portable antenna might be better. Look for Larson or Diamond antennas for these. If you do want to have the antenna on your vehicle, look for a magnetic base type antenna and place it in the center of the car's roof for best coverage. This will get you a good ground plane for the antenna and will be at a good height. Don't forget to order an adapter to get the antenna connection right. I believe the TS-LRS is a BNC connector. Most vehicle antennas are either regular PL259 (sometimes called UHF) or mini-UHF. Also, be sure to purchase the antenna for the correct UHF band. Most commercial antennas are for 450-470Mhz. You will need to make sure it can cover 430-440Mhz. Most are adjustable.

This is a good 3dB portable antenna: http://www.diamondantenna.net/rh707.html

Here is a good vehicle antenna: Look for Larsen NMO440 :http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...m/larsenm.html

yes I was planning on using the car mount magnetic antenna on top of the car.

On nice days I will sit next to the car, when it gets too hot again in the summer I plan on sitting inside the car so nobody can bother me while I'm on my first couple of flights I don't want to be distracted I'm not that good yet!!

Thank you so very much for your help!!! I'll probably order one or both of those antennas!!

    Hi Adam,

You should have received an antenna with the Scherrer system. Did you get it from me?

Range on the ground is significantly less than it will be in the air. You'll get many miles in the air.

If it were me, I'd mount the transmitter unit on the roof of your car with the stock antenna pointed straight up. It's better than running an antenna cable from inside the car, where you would have some loss of signal (not a lot, but some).

Yes you are right my friend Tim!!!

I'm sure if I ordered it from you I would definitely get the antenna!! I posted this in the wrong place!! I ordered it from a different website before they got in stock on your website.

I've ordered 3 of the long range receivers from you now!!! SORRY for the confusion. Now I ALWAYS look to buy things from readymaderc.com first!! You have GREAT customer service and I appreciate it tremendously!!

Tim you are the best!!! Thanks again!! SOrry for any confusion!! I just assumed that they weren't being shipped with the antenna because thats how I got mine.

I have my TLRS module taped to my tx. But I do have a magnetic mount with no antenna connected, just a bnc connector, similar to http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...ntht/4443.html. I plan on using the stock antenna on it during summer while I seek shade or a/c.
