The Swift II Chronicles

So – I admit – I am starting this a bit late in the game. I have been flying my first Swift II (aptly named Honey Badger) for some time now with a varying degree of success. The catalyst behind venturing away from my trusty Easy Star airframe was an inherent desire to enjoy FPV flying without the complexity typically associated. I had to do a fair amount of soul searching to come up with what I thought would work – and while I mainly found a hollow pit devoid of most human emotions – it turns out I’m cheap. That would mean that I needed a plane that was – well – cheap. Since I suck as a LOS pilot and have never flown anything other than an EZStar – I also needed something that was easy to fly. My list of criteria developed into something about like this:

1) CHEAP. It turns out I don’t really care about losing a plane – but I do care about losing the money associated with replacing it. Since my soul searching yielded very little in the way of tangible assurances – it did uncover the simple fact that I don’t have much emotional attachment to….things. Ergo – I don’t place much value on building time. This would need to be a dollars and cents kind of thing.

2) EASY. If this thing was going to be my “throw and go” plane – it meant it had to be easy to fly, easy to transport, and easy to build. Turns out building a plane with the intentions of not caring about it is harder than it seems.

3) GOOD. Simple really – it needs to be good at what it does. I don’t want to have a plane that actively seeks its own death – I already had that… it was called a FunJet. Something that responds to control inputs, goes where I tell it to go – and generally handles most conditions well. It also needs to be able to withstand some “use.”

After looking at several planes and airframes – the decision was made VERY easy after watching Chad and Greg at the Central Florida FPV Event. They had a couple of them there – the little slice of foam Heaven – a little plane called the Swift II. Small and sleek – yet bold. This isn’t really that little guy from Brooklyn, NY that screams in your ear at the top of his lungs to overcompensate for his small penis size…. No. this is a much more subtle kind of attention. If I had to place it – I would say that the plane has the personality of “The Worlds Most Interesting Man” who can tell you a story without ever opening his mouth. But with more “kick assery.”

Enter: Alpine Flyer (aka – the Honey Badger).

And this... is where I will share my gathered wisdom, knowledge, experiences, and subsequent failures with you.

There really isn’t any particular reason that I chose this pattern for the plane – the local hobby store had a few – and this one looked okay. I tried to mimic several of the proven Swifts out there today with my setup.. basically this plane was going to have the Skylark Tiny II or Trace II OSD, Dragonlink, 500/2.4 vtx. I would fly it with a 2200mah pack. Pretty straight forward.

I don’t have many build pictures – simply because I didn’t take any – and because it involved gluing 2 pieces of foam together. As with everything – I also got a bit carried away when trying to make the cutouts for everything… needless to say – the plane really turned out looking and feeling like a spongy piece of shit. By the time all was said and done – I had cut most of the plane away – leaving very little for structural rigidity. Even the CF spars were barely adequate. The Honey Badger looked at me to say “WTF are you doing dude?”

In retrospect – we had a very successful build with Traderdmb’s Swift II – though neither of us remember it due to some beer. Shit – in the end – his flies awesome! Here is some flight video of his with the new balse elevons. Knife edge precision.

My Setup.

It took a while to get this thing to be even remotely flyable. For real – this plane was a basket case. COG was WAY off – I had the battery mounted way too far forward. So I cut the battery tray back further and lined it with coroplast – then a Velcro strap the hold the battery in. That seemed to help. I also ended up removing the OSD because I couldn’t get it to work. One of these days I will try it again – but it’s not going to be any time soon. Maybe on one of the other Swifts in my hangar. It also turns out that since I had cut SO MANY holes in the plane – it flopped around like a sky trout. Seriously – it was like a wet sock. Me, being the LOS aficionado that I am, had to have someone else continue to fly it until all the issues were worked out. It’s amazing that it was as hard as it was to do – considering the COG (when installed) is like 3” – honestly – the plane just doesn’t give a shit.

So despite the floppy wings, the bad COG, and enough holes to make a stop sign on a back country road in Texas blush – It finally flew. I still have a fair amount of torque roll – but it was toned way down when I moved to the 7X5APC. The 8X6 was just too much for the 1250kv Value Hobby motor. I will put a link to it later. The ESC is a CC Thunderbird 54 that I had laying around... a bit bigger than I really need.

Value Hobby Motor:
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j174/dlincon/backofthemotor.jpg

Now that the plane flew – It was time to add some tape and fill what holes I could. Did I mention the SHITLOAD of holes? I bought a sheet of EPP and cut to fit. Glue, cut, glue, cut – rinse, lather, repeat. Then I reinforced the leading edge with some EXTREME packing tape… regular just won’t do the trick. Nothing but EXTREME for the honey Badger! What a difference it made! The plane returned to being fairly rigid – it was an AMAZING difference.

One last flight and it was time to add the camera.

Oh yeah – forgot to mention.. Aside from removing the OSD from the plane – I also relocated the servos back a bit further towards the elevons. This not only helped with the GOG – but also made the controls a bit better – just by virtue of having shorter control rods. The picture above in no way represents what the plane looks like today.

This is as of last night - after being repaired from it's 3rd MAROR crash.

I will skip most of the little things - but here is the basic idea... The SWIFT II is a totally kick ass plane. It flies like a much bigger plane, handles wonderfully, doesn't want to kill itself, and is super easy in every way.

The occasional issue comes up when you lock out and smack the ground (video coming soon). It also stings a bit when Captain Retardo clips your camera wire with his prop. Running head first into a pine tree hasn't helped the plane much either. Honey Badger don't give a shit... Honey Badger is BAD ASS.

Here is a picture from Monday... it's after I had a nose in from a lockout. Traderdmb decided to land next to it and go for the walk with me. The nose was pretty much torn off, the motor torn off, the ESC wires torn out, there were holes in the wing (that weren't there before), motor mount broken again (first time was from the pine tree). If you look in the picture - you can see the small foam bits on the ground.

This is how we found them.

Some relatively unedited video of a some tandem action... using this (among the other hour of video I have) for part of a Swift II compliation.

Much of it is raw, gritty, static filled video footage. It's clear that the 900 systems penetrate obstacles MUCH better than 2.4 - but there is nothing that isn't really flyable... you just need to understand where you are, and how to "bail out" if the video gets too bad.

One of these days we're going to post a tandem video of shooting between some cows legs. At that point - I think I will retire as a BAWS!

Needless to say - Honey Badger has been taking an ass kicking of Biblical proportions lately. Not only did it have to put up with my VERY STEEP learning curve of flying a small wing - but it also has to be able to put up with my desire to see how close to things that I can get. After all - some of the best video is by pilots who are pushing the limits. I admit - I am far from finding the limits of this particular plane - but as I improve my flying, the air frame, and the flight systems - the wrecks will become more severe and certainly more frequent.

So far the motor mount has been broken twice, the nose crushed and torn off at least 5 times, there are multiple holes in the plane - fact is - I think there is still a stick in the wing somewhere. The plane is made up of 37% raw testosterone, 14% hot glue, 44% foam, and 17% tape. How is that possible you ask? Honey Badger gives more than 100% - it's just that easy!

Wrapping my head around the idea that Honey Badger simply can't live forever - I have decided that multiple planes is the way to go - if for no other reason that reducing down time when I test the "return to ground" or "return to tree" features.

The Raceline Swift is set up to be a 1.2mhz plane. I made my Ground Station "hot swappable" so changing over frequencies is a matter of seconds. I don't know what I hope to do better with the 1.2 - but it seems fun anyway.

The Raceline Swift will also get the benefit of a slightly larger and more powerful motor... it's a 1500kv instead of the 1250 on Honey Badger. I will start with the same 7X5 prop that I am using now and take it from there. Largely it will depend on the torque roll. The ESC is the Hobby Wing 30a.

I finished this one up last night... the same Sony 600TVL board camera on Honey Badger will be used on this plane - it's a great and light camera. It is, however, un-fond of faceplanting into trees, ground, cars, roads, street signs, cows, and people.

This plane has very little in the way of reinforcement - a couple of thin CF strips and a little bit of tape on the leading edge.

I present to you: Raceline.

Among some other changes between the 2 planes are the motor (which I have already discussed). I have also switched to a camera with the 3.6mm lense instead of the standard 2.8. Not sure how that will go - but I will give it a try anyway. I have a 6mm to try as well.

At some point one of these planes will become a dedicated night rig - with the LL lens. Should be VERY cool - as I have seen this lens work - and it works WELL!

There is another fleet of Swifts coming by way of the magical powers of UPS as well. Traderdmb likes the idea of having a backup as well... We ordered 3 more. I will keep one as a third (probably soon to be second after one of the planes goes to the great foam Heaven in the sky).

Here is a preview of what's coming in. I can't wait to build "Trashy Lady."

I managed to get a few flights in yesterday despite the wind. Even as easy as this plane is to fly and launch - I still managed to fawk it up. I launched full throttle and down wind / cross wind. Yeah - that worked well. The good news is I only broke the prop. I had to fight Honey Badger to use its prop - it had the only other 7X5 in the house... Honey Badger don't give a shit - Honey Badger can run in slow motion (without a prop).

I am still working through a couple of issues with my ground station - the Oracle is giving me a bit of switching noise - which is pretty normal - except its also switching 4 million times during the flight. My fawking ground station sounds like morse code. I changed the settings last night - hopefully its a bit better now.

Anyway - 5 flights out of my back yard chasing golfers around the hood was fun. I tried some low flying / tree and house slolom. That worked well until I used the "return to tree." That function worked perfectly. It required a LOOOOONNNNGGGGG pole to get it out. We had a quad video the ordeal - but it fell out of the sky and corrupted the video... oh well.

I had another incident that required me to fly LOS (yikes). I launched, gained some altitude, some distance, pulled the goggles down....nothing. I ran to the GS monitor - had video. Looked up - and there was the plane. I landed LOS (yay) and diagnosed the problem. Turns out the goggles need to be plugged in to work. FAAAAAAAWk.

Had another return to tree when I tried to fly between my house and my neighbors.

I really need to be using Honey Badger for this stuff... the new Swift is still really quite a nice flying plane. I also ned to diagnose some video issues - but I know that they are frequency related.

Trashy Lady showed up yesterday too along with 2 other Swifts. One went home with Traderdmb. The other has yet to find a new home.

Will post some video and pics later.

Reverand Blue Chip
17th April 2012, 09:34 PM
Honey Badger is on 2.4 - Raceline is on 1.3 (ish).

I am really trying to work through some of the issues today with the new 1.2 Swift - the Oracle is morse coding Helen Kellers learning syllabus to the Japanese right now - and every time it does - my fawking video flickers. I tried each RX independently - then with each antenna... everything works great - until I put them through the Oracle.

I'll say this - you can get yourself into some STUPID tight spaces with this airframe - especially when you stop caring.

This is a work in progress - however - here are some of the highlights from May so far... FINALLY got the BWEZ out the other day - it's a slug compared to the Swift II - but a great plane to fly. Been mostly flying the Swifts though becasue of the wind. I am switching over to 1.2 for video from 2.4 - seems like a more reliable link and better quality... for me it is.

Once my new RX's come in - Honey Badger will become a dedicated night rig with a 6mm low light lense and an OSD. The Raceline will continue to be a light weight - and I haven't decided what to do with Trashy Lady... it needs to be built - but will only happen after I finish my ZII.

So what's in this video? Not much really - it's unedited for the most part and is just a few short clips of the month so far...

Night flight / full moon with 6mm camera
Botched landing hitting another plane
Buzzing Doug as he comes back from getting his downed plane
More moon
Cloud attempt on a #11 keychain
More Doug
Harrier landing
More altitude / cloud attempt
More Doug doing bad things to his plane
Reaching the cloud base only to realize that there is nowhere to go
Central Florida rainstorm
Doug dancing
Rain storm – with GREAT video link quality

I stripped the 2.4 stuff out of Honey Badger and replaced with the 1.2 gear. I also dropped a Tiny II OSD on it. This plane is really on its last legs but it refuses to give up. I did a quick re-maiden yesterday - stuffed the landing and cartwheeled the plane. Go figure - the motor mount ripped off the plane... again. (Remember - the back of the plane is almost all CA / hot glue / filler / scrap EPP).

After 5 minutes of CA and a half way enthusiastic "that'll do" I threw it in the air again... Yep - flys fine. Now she's outfitted with a 6mm night lense on the camera.... NIGHT RIG!

So where are we today?

That Raceline Swift is my dedicated light weight Swift... flies great but I think I need to adjust some of the settings on the camera - the low light handling / evenings are tough. That plane is solid...

Honey Badger, on the other hand, looks like a hooker on nickle beer night got jumped by a bunch of Somali Pirates. I don't know exactly how that would look - but I'm pretty sure that its going to look like The Badger. Circular reference? Yep. HB is a night rig though (even though I flew it yesterday in the daytime). I'm crazy like that.

The only issue that I can think of lately with HB is that the fawking Skylark OSD has decided not to detect the RSSI. It doesn't really matter though - the limit for this plane is determined by the battery - not the radio link. I took it out to 1.6 miles yesterday at just under 3000 feet. Pretty much a non event. I can say this though - the added weight it kind of nice to handle the wind. HB's illegitimate sister (Raceline) flys well - but lacks the 1/2 roll of EXTREME (you have to yell it when you say EXTREME) packing tape and gallon of CA complimneted by 14 sticks of hot glue. I honestly don't know how that plane is still in the air...

Regardless - I have wrapped my head around HBs demise. It's going to be a sad day for sure - but it's coming. I'm half way tempted to go for the Swift II world record and go for 4 miles and 8000 altitude. Even if I fail and the plane is gone - it died doing something legendary... not giving a shit.

I am in the process of laying out "Trashy Lady." She's so hot. I don't really know how / what I want to do with this plane - but I am thinking that she'll get a pan servo with a 180 degree mod and maybe an OSD. I don't know. I have definitely learned how to build these things light... which is a big plus. I would rather have the weight used for things like battery and OSD rather than tape and what not.

I'll take some pictures of the fleet this weekend. Maybe I'll make em all artsy and shit.

Oh - and Honey Badger (recently converted to a dedicated night rig) needs a new board camera too. Why? Easy. Becasue it's not the Easy Star.

So Trashy Lady got finished up with her full outfit of Altitude Junkies gear - V mast, skids, and the pan board camera mount. Maiden went VERY will - took her out to 1.5 miles as a shake out with beautiful video. Also maidened another Swift II for Traderdmb.

Trashy Lady and the Raceline are both very close in weight - coming in right around 18oz or so without the battery - I am running 3S 2200's - 20 or 25c so add the weight to get to the AUW.

Honey Badger is a bit heavier - with strobes, strip LED lights, an OSD, about 4 total glue sticks, 1/2 quart of CA, a roll of Extreme tape, and various other fixes - I have not weighed it yet - but I imagine it's in the 24oz range with no battery. I upgraded the motor to a 1500kz (up from a 1250). It still flies great despite looking like shit.

I used 3 mill lam on my blunt. Do it, barely any extra weight. Its not needed though. Carbon spar and fiber tape is good enough. I just used the lam on the blunt since the wings were so far out the center and tended to bend at the tips. Seriously man you are going to be in for such a pleasant surprise when you toss this beautiful plane in the air.

LOL chad you might as well make one of these for me, I saw someone selling 2 Swift II on RCUniverse one RTF and one NIB both for $100 i could pass and bought them, so i guess i did follow your advice :)

Awesome man, you will love it. We have some sweet Swift 2 gear at www.ezfpv.com that you may want to check out. Motor mount is serious and the servo protectors are awesome.

Nah, I was kidding. He's working on some stuff and he'll be back soon enough. I just wanted to see if I could prompt a response from him.

By far my favorite plane is a popwing with 2.4ghz VTX, EXUHF lite RX, board camera w/pan and tilt, 2600mah 3s lipo, 1250kv motor, 20amp ESC, a couple of MG servos and a great location to fly at. Like the swift II these are some fun wings that handle tuff conditions all so well. With 20-30mins fly time what more do you need.

Great Thread!
