sentry...why in the hell is your patch aiming DOWN?

Scale 10.3 miles out from base. Then scale only 6000 feet up at that distance. Now add that to the vertical beam-width of a 14dBi patch (50 degrees). That's 50 degrees coming out of the patch ---- now - 10 miles from there how tall is that vertical beam? :) The further you are away - the more you can point the antenna at the ground w/ 0 change in reception. It does look weird though - LOL.

Put your plane 5 miles out - let's say 2000 feet. Now grab your patch and point it as far down to the ground as you can w/out going 100% perpendicular. Then move it as far up as you can. Then tell me what the video image does. I'll need to know these 2 things...

1) @ what degree does video quality start to degrade on the way down?
2) @ what degree does it NOT get any better on the way up? ;)

is this a "real world vs on paper" thing? Share your results... im too lazy to go test this and I havent flown 5 miles yet. I just want to add this though..... it goes against all writen logic about "aiming antennas" and Augustin-Jean Fresnel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustin-Jean_Fresnel) would be very upset.

I had direct LOS to my plane 10 miles out. Here is a picture for you.

LAUNCH ELEVATION: 906 ft
TARGET ELEVATION: 1001 ft
HIGHEST POINT BETWEEN LAUNCH and TARGET : 1131ft (ridge, 7.2miles out from launch)

DELTA: 225 FEET (IF MY PLANE WAS ON THE GROUND AT THE TARGET) But it was't - I was over 6k feet above launch at the distant end. :)

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u59/MUSIC_MAESTRO/10MILE.jpg

As you can see --- the highest point between my launch and my target is only 225feet higher than launch elevation. Imagine a patch w/ a 50 degree beam pointed PERFECTLY level with the ground, trying to hit a transmitter 10 miles out at 6000 feet. That is a TALL vertical beam. Even figuring in sidelobe losses, I am WELL inside the zone. :)

Picture the tx (which has direct LOS to the rx) tilted down (or up) - will it still have direct LOS? Yes. :)
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u59/MUSIC_MAESTRO/FRESNAL.png

It looks weird bc we (humans) only see the patch. We do not see the honking 50 degree beam coming out of it. Aesthetics aside, there is nothing to gain 10 miles out in this environment at the altitude I carried by changing the antennas position vertically.

It is a "worked in real life despite logic" situation.

I was ground crew on that flight. This was one of the early flights with the tracker, and I too was confused why it pointed at what seemed below horizon. So, we played with it pointed all over the place, and couldn't see any appreciable increase in video fidelity or quality. So we just left it alone.

I just added a "Race" section.

I thought it might be fun to see who can fly 5 miles away and land the fastest.

Take off (start timer)
Fly 5 miles (8km) away
Land (stop timer)

This is a test of both your airframe and your equipment, and should be fun :)

Well, I say a high speed anyting will beat a low speed anything else given there are no other conditions. I dont think airframe should be considered by the list, just time. If you can beat the times with a 140W 2s skywalker, so be it. Just tell us how...?!

True. Pick up a 30mph tailwind and thatll help. Of course, my E* is ridiculously overpowered, so it might hold its own anyway =]

All speed records (most anyway) require an out-and-back to null any effects of wind.

I think another more important record would be lowest amps to maintain level flight for a 5 mile course (5 out and 5 back). Or you could do 5 out and 5 back with least amount of mAh consumed.

Derek_S

So that would be a "Most Efficient Flight" test?

I like these ideas that exploit different avenues of friendly competition other than boring ol' long range.

My first real range attempt, wanted to double my old range record of 5km. So did 11km the video and rc were still good but the easystar can't carry enough juice to travel any farther. So I'm looking for a new plane to go further.

Setup:

Easystar 2x 2200mah 3s
400mw 1.3ghz tx
Cloverleaf on tx and 6 turn helical on rx
pixim seawolf (need to change the settings)
ezosd
Long range tslrs receiver

Would you be into a small section for FPV ground vehicles distance? Then we could track the range of some of them. I'm actually shocked more people don't run ground vehicles FPV since it's so forgiving if there are video link issues unlike flying.

Maybe something like you have but adding the video link.

For instance my listing under Ground Vehicles would say:

10. Calidave ----------0.58 miles ---------0.93 km ----- 5.8gHz Video Link

I know there aren't a ton of folks running FPV on the ground, but maybe it would spur more to enjoy in the fun. No worries if not

I think that is a good idea, I'm curious about how many people do run ground fpv.

I think the reason its not to popular though is because it doesn't really allow you to do anything more than what you could do in a real car. Not too many people have real planes.

But, yeah... there are enough exciting things in the air that one doesn't need to add ground vehicles. I'll tell you, compared to flying, it's WAY low stress with ground vehicles in FPV.

Bumping this one back up, since I set a new personal best on Saturday (and actually got it on video this time!). Should put me in 11th spot (or maybe 12th, as there's currently two #10's listed).

Anyway, my TinyII is currently configured in Metric, and my video shows a max range of 5.42km (which equates to ~3.36 miles).

Airframe specs:
50" scratch built EPS wing (2" blunt)
2200kv outrunner w/ APC 6x4E prop
2x 3S 2200 35C Voltz lipos (parallel configuration)
Skylark TinyII OSD
TLRS long-range Rx
910MHz 500mW vTx, 2dbi dipole, w/ LPF (to an 8dbi flat patch on ground)

I'll add a video when I have time to sit down and edit it. There's interference, but it's purely ESC noise from lack of an LC filter. Couldn't even see it under the goggles, but it shows up clear as day in the recorded video.

Yea, true, he still has Sentry listed at 10.x miles when we all know he's broken 16. Ahwell. What can ya do, except go fly and enjoy the view? =]

6832Well bumped the personal best bar up for me a few notches... went past my previous longest reaching about 3.7 miles out on my 5.8 600mw IRC video link. At that range it seems I'm using the TrueRC 7 turn helical and not the blubeam I have on diversity. It's nice because it's the longest with my Skywalker I've gone just beating my Twin Star record, and that previous best was on 1280mhz and I think matching that with 5.8 is a nice testate to 5.8... the most misunderstood frequency. ;-)

@PilotKeeg - If you're getting tired of this or don't feel like keeping up with it, I can start a new thread.

New personals for me.

Made a 41 minute flight, and 23 miles total distance flown on one battery using about 6400mAh in the SW. I think I can press that to about 50 minutes if I was flying managing power.

James got a cool shot before landing:

Nice man! Saw you post that in the RL thread too. Can't wait to see some video. 18mph wind and lots of gusts meant no record attempts for me. :(

8.6 Km distance away from launch today. Yesterday was the first time I ventured out past 2km (skeered). 1st was 4km, 2nd was 5km, 3rd flight yesterday was 7.6 km and then today was 8.6. I dont think this compares to many on the site but a big accomplishment for me. Now I'm learning a lot more, but in the air. One thing that I did do was verify OSD data, versus Google Earth. I trust Google Earth more so these distances are based off of reference (turn back) points that I can see in my GoPro videos. No OSD videos because I have a Piano DVR and it finally went tits up. Hunk of crap to begin with.

I have a 20km flight planned but I need to learned throttle management a little better before that can happen. Once I make that one, most likely I will not do long distance anymore. Longest for me will probably be 5-7 k becasue of the area that Im in.
Overall, pretty happy with myself for accomplishing this with FPVLAB's help. Thanks all!

Will do, I haven't updated my personal copy of the list in over a month since I PM'd it to PilotKeeg and posted them in this thread. I'm working on the updates since then right now.
